We just got an I-797C from USCIS today, saying the case type is an "OS155A Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration."

Notice type is: Receipt Notice; Fee in Suspense.

Here is the message:

"The above application or petition has been received. We have placed it in suspense pending a decision on the fee. We will send you a written notice as soon as a decision is made with regard to the fee and acceptance of your case."

Okay, I'm assuming the fee is the $165 you pay for the actual green card, right? If so, I paid that nearly a month ago, after my wife was approved for her visa, and we have the receipt for it.

I checked the case on the USCIS website with the receipt number, and it says:

"On April 2, 2013, we mailed you a notice with information about processing your OS155A, IMMIGRANT VISA AND ALIEN REGISTRATION. Your request to waive the filing fee is being reviewed. You will be notified when a decision is made on your fee waiver request."

Um... I never requested to waive the filing fee. I make plenty to afford $165.

Seriously, what is this? I'm a little more than confused and worried.

My wife entered the U.S. on March 23rd. She already has her Social Security Number, she's enrolled in DEERS, has her medical insurance, heck, new cell phone, she's on my lease and everything. We're doing her resume right now and going to a job fair on Tuesday. Not a good time to start playing curveball with us.

Figures.

We saw the envelope in the mail and got all excited thinking it was her welcome letter, but instead we get a fee in suspense notice and "You will be informed in writing," and went a little panicky.
