The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria issues the following security message for the attention of all U.S. citizens in Niger …

This is the same as their usual holiday warning and only slightly more dramatic than their normal one.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

A foreigner from Victoria Island was kidnapped a couple of days ago. There was a kidnapping where my husband stays just last week of a Nigerian. The ransom was for 10 million naira. My husband stays in Abia state.

Yes, that's correct and that's the critical one.

Kidnappings of foreigners mostly occurs in Ibo areas with oil workers and such. Never in Yoruba areas and most definitely not in Victoria Island.

Any astute foreigner/visitor would take note as this is a dangerous precedence.

Foreigners should always stay on alert when in Nigeria. It is best to stay in safer areas and avoid putting themselves in greater danger than necessary.

Victoria Island is a safer area from my experience while in Lagos. One needs to use cautious even there. Whether it is an Ibo thing or Yoruba that is irrelevant, for one needs to be careful regardless.

I disagree, it is very relevant.

It is a well known fact that the foreigners working in the oil producing regions are the ones that are mostly kidnapped.

In case my comment are perceived as racial bent, it is not to. Just sharing news for those that may let their guard down thinking that they are in VI so they must be safe.

Well we can agree to disagree. Workers have body guards sometimes from what I have witnessed and heard from them. All I am saying here, as a traveler it is best to take the necessary precautions to avoid placing one's self in unnecessary danger. Nigerianorbust has a point. I don't think one needs to walk around as a moving target showing off expensive jewelery and waive dollars in the air or wear expensive clothing and etc. or put themselves in areas of concern or known incidents.

My husband is Yoruba and he doesn't speak bad about anyone. He has friends from different tribes. He judges them by their deeds not where they are from.

This is a great subject of discussion and I am glad it came up. All I am saying it is imperative to take precautions and stay alert when traveling anywhere.

Thanks Gowon for your feed back.

And that is the crux of the mater and this is not a post about tribalism, of which I have no need to discuss as it's not on my radar, frankly.

I never spoke about my any Nigerian tribes, and in fact I took painstaking steps to make sure I mentioned only areas. Nigeria has three predominant areas as divided by our 2 great rivers, Niger and Benue. At the top is the Hausalands, left lower quandrant by the Yorubalands and the other by the Ibolands.

A traveller should take precautions, this is of course a forgone conclusion. Point of my post was to simply post an alert that a kidnaping occurred in an area that does not generally have kidnappings so extra precautions can be taken.
