AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Gov. Rick Perry rallied opponents of gay marriage and abortion on Tuesday, calling for support for what he called traditional values on the same day the U.S. Supreme Court heard a challenge to California’s ban on gay marriage.

About 200 social conservatives gathered at noon on the Texas Capitol’s south steps to show their support for more laws based on Christian beliefs. The event was organized by a group called Texas Values.

...

The group says it wants to limit no-fault divorce, discourage premarital sex, promote abstinence education and protect the state’s Christian heritage.

Perry prides himself on his social conservatism.

“This is a very unsettling time in our nation’s history,” the state’s longest-serving governor said. “These are the days when a person is vilified when they state that they believe fundamentally that marriage is between one man and one woman.”

Perry was the driving force behind a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Texas.

...

“The underlying problem is that there is this very vocal, very litigious minority of Americans willing to legally attack anybody who dares utter a phrase or even a name that they don’t agree with,” Perry said. “In a twisting of logic, they insist on silencing the religious in the cause of tolerance. Now I ask you, where is the tolerance in that?”

Ergo, Perry wants Texas to be more like Iran!

I think Perry is against same-sex marriage so that he doesn't feel pressured to marry his assistant...

Iran is not Christian.

 Traditional values.

Slavery was a traditional value. Banning interracial marriages was a traditional value.

Rick Perry is part of the group that sees his country evolving to a place he can't quite wrap his mind around, and understands he's being left in the dust, and it's scaring him. Poor guy.

I do not believe the religious should be silent. They should speak their minds freely. However, they should not be making the laws of this country. This country is not their church. The Bible should have no power beyond the lives of those who follow it.

I remember when when Bush was governor of Texas. I always thought he would make a good president, because Texas was/is a pretty good place to live. Come to find out, the Texas governor actually has little power when it comes to passing laws or making policy. The Lt. governor actually has much more power. Rick Perry is kinda like the crazy old uncle in the basement that runs his mouth all the time, but really has no ability to do anything.

if the rumors are true, he also swings both ways, which as a woman could be a bonus for you.

I am sure the rumors to be true. No sane balanced heterosexual man would have hissy fits over same-sex marriage in a state he most likely can't point out on a map.

He is trying too hard to play the part of conservative straight christian and we all know what that means....

The lady doth protests too much, methinks...
