Hi everybody,

First post on this board. What a great site. I'm an American guy living in Tokyo, Japan on a 90-day tourist visa. This is my second 90-day stay here - on the first, I met a wonderful Chinese girl who is here in Tokyo on a Student visa. This time, we got engaged and now we're going through the frustrating process I'm sure many of you have been through. If anyone can help me with my three questions, I'd be much obliged. If these have been answered before, I apologize - I couldn't find an answer so far.

Both questions relate to the first section on the first page of I-129F, where you fill out an address for yourself and your fiancee.

1. Will my Chinese fiancee be able to complete the process while living in Tokyo, or will she have to go back to China for any part of it?

2. I'm currently living in Tokyo with my fiancee on my 90-day tourist visa. I don't have a residence back in the United States currently - that's something I plan on finding when I get back to America. Is it appropriate to put the Tokyo address as my address?

3. If so, how the heck can I manage that? The form I have seems to assume the address will be in a Western style format. Japanese addresses are much more complex (trust me, if you've never tried to find an address here, you don't ever want the displeasure). For instance, there's no such thing as a street name in Japan - they use a grid system here. To make matters worse, even if I just sort of shoehorned my address into the existing fields, there's no way they would fit, since it's an extremely long address. Here's a slightly modified example of my address:

123 Panahaitsumokogaoka, 4-56-78 Shukugahara

Kawasakishi, Kanagawaken 90-1234

Japan

Anyone have any experience with this type of problem? Any advice at all would be invaluable.

Cheers,

Sean

1) If she is legally residing in Japan and will for the entire process then simply request Tokyo as your consulate.

2) You should put in an address that you can receive mail at during the entire process. If the address you have is temporary then a suggestion might be a friend or relative.

YMMV

Great. Thanks for that. Yes, she's a Student here, so it shouldn't be a problem. We'll make sure that she stays with this apartment and use this address for both of us. In the case that I'm back in the States by the end of the process, she'll just have to forward the mail onto me, I guess.
