Hello all,

I tried to look up this topic in old posts but I could only find information about beneficiaries changing their names. I am the petitioner and my will be husband is the beneficiary. I want to take his name after marriage but I am worried about it interfering with the process of his adjustment of status. I know to change my name I will have to surrender my passport until I get the new one with the new name. Will I need the passport for his filing AOS? Or for anything else? We want to file AOS as soon as possible after the wedding to decrease amount of time before he will be able to work. But I'm afraid if I wait until after AOS the name change may be more complicated. Anyone been through this?

Also, he kind of has 3 last names as he is Egyptian and I only want to take the first one. That is the only one he normally uses. Do I have to take his full last name or can I choose to just use the first one?

Thanks!

November 2nd 2012- NOA1
December 25th 2012- I returned to Rome for my last big trip
March 2013- I went back to Memphis to work full time and plan for the wedding

I also am an American married to an Egyptian. I do not plan to take his last name legally until everything is completed ( him living here in the US with greencard in Hand) We will take Aref as our last name, as it is on his passport. I like Saleh better, but he preferes Aref. Another of my friends whom married an Egyptian took 1 of the 3 last names that was not on his passport, but I'm not sure how they did that. I will have to check and get back with you on that one. Sorry, this was meant for the Original poster..

Thank you both. I had hoped to change my name right away but I don't want to slow down his immigration process. Did you wait for the conditional green card (2 year) or the more permanent one (10 year)?

I actually JUST changed my last name as well....and my husband just flew here to the states. I was also worried about it interfering....not sure it would have....however I was most nervous about needing my passport with my correct name on it for any last minute travel to visit my husband I may have needed to do before he came. Now that he is safely here....I felt it was the right time. :)

I changed my name after AOS but before removing conditions. We did it this way because there's so much paperwork involved with AOS - time-consuming process of adding him to all of our accounts, listing him as a beneficiary, going to Social Security, etc. - and thought it'd drive us crazy having to manage the process for both of us at the same time.

There's soooo much that happens when the beneficiary beau arrives that you may want to consider making it as easy as possible on yourselves even if that means postponing doing something you really want to do like changing your name. Either way, it'll happen.
