OMG this thread makes me want ANYTHING with curry.

i never ate much Indian food, but when I was living in NYC my indian friend would take me to little India - and OMG it was heaven. I love it.

Stewart and I have been talking about going to this one place here in town, Cilantros. It's supposed to be really good - now I REALLY wanna go :)

Are there any websites with decent recipes for this stuff that poor clueless Americans such as myself can use to recreate this euphoria for our deprived brit spouses?

I'm pretty sure Madhur Jaffrey will have some decent recipes online. Don't forget to search on UK Google. ;) If at all possible, get your spices at an Asian grocery, or failing that a Co-op. Supermarket spices just don't seem to cut it when trying to make the 'real' thing. Curry leaves also seem to be what makes a difference in my dishes. They are usually sold fresh, but if you dry them out and store them properly they last a long time. And commercial curry powders don't cut it either, but someone more informed may be able to point in the direction of ones that are?.

OK, I am not much of a cook myself but my sister has suggested this site for people who are beginners in this type of cooking:

http://www.syvum.com/recipes/incindex.html

The dishes that are popular amongst a lot of non-Indians and seem to hit my taste buds as well are:

Butter Chicken (personal favourite, try to make it with ghee or white unsalted butter + fresh cream)

Grilled Chicken in gravy (gravy=Brit use of the word "curry", more or less)

Chicken Masala

Chicken Curry

kadhai Chicken (my 2nd fav dish)

Chicken Danshak

You will also find a recipe for ghee (clarified butter), but i would suggest you just go to a Indian shop and buy it, it stinks like hell when u make it, and its generally difficult to get it right, even if your mom teaches you how to...

My other suggestion, because getting the right taste can depend so much on the masalas (spices) available in the local market, is to befriend an indian cook (North Indian, i am biased, sorry people), and ask him/her for his suggestions, sicne there are certain prepared masalas available too, which might end up beign a better choice dependent again on the quality of local spices/butter and/or preparation.

God, I hardly know how to make an omelette but you have got me going here, with my sis on the phone with me :) Guess I love my food, or as I used to tell my mom, I do half the work - I eat all you make!

I have to agree with looking for North Indian food especially for Scots as most Indian eateries in Scotland are Punjabi owned. Once you get used to their food nothing else tastes right. Even when I have been in India I've travelled miles out of my way to get good North Indian food.

I must have no self respect though because I love jeera rice with everything. :) Since I'm only a very small part Indian maybe I have an excuse.

On Saturday and Sunday I might have a pizza....

On the topic of pizza.. erekose, if you end up on Oak Tree Road, there's this little place that makes Indian-style pizza, right next to Ming. Definitely worth a try

Lately I really like Maharashtra pickled mango, and have been putting it on all different things...like pizza! That's our version of Indian style pizza  . And I just ate a tuna fish sandwich for lunch, with some pickled mango to dip it into. I used to hate the stuff but now I love it. It tastes good with so many weird things.

This thread has made me decide that when I finally get my K1 (impatient, me - we only sent the petition off the other week), I am most definitely going to go and stuff my face with as much Indian food as I can possibly handle, on my last night in the UK.

I'm sure the other passengers on the plane will appreciate that the next morning....

We live an hour away from many different Indian restaurants. One in particular is really really good. Most bigger US cities have Indian restaurants. I don't know what English style curry is, but at a store here they have been selling Patak's curry jars (made in the UK), and it doesn't taste like real Indian food at all to me. It has no spiciness.

But besides that, I've never tasted "English styled curry" so I don't know what the difference is. I can't imagine that it could be better than pure traditional Indian food.

I love Indian food. I'm so glad I met Sujeet so that I could also eat Indian food. (never ate it before knowing him!) Whatever way I have it, which I guess is traditional since Sujeet is from India, is soooo good. :D

Hey! I went to Alabama last weekend. We were mostly in Gadsden but on Saturday night we drove to Birmingham and went to the Riverchase Galleria mall. It was a very nice mall.

We are moving to that area in about 2 years. I also had found Indian restaurants online that are in Birmingham but we didn't have time to eat at one.
