Obama: Immigration leak didn't hurt Senate talks

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, one of the Republicans in the group, said Obama's plan injects partisanship into a tough process. And David Axelrod, a senior adviser to Obama's re-election campaign, acknowledged that it likely was a mistake for news of Obama's plan to be made public.

Obama said Wednesday he still prefers that Congress — not the White House — craft a viable law to overhaul the nation's immigration system, and that his standby bill doesn't intrude on the bill that senators are hashing out. He said the ideas included in his bill are consistent with the immigration proposals he has advocated for the past several years, meaning they shouldn't come as a surprise to members of either party.

Obama's comments came in an interview with KWEX, San Antonio's Univision affiliate and one of eight local TV stations to sit down with Obama on Wednesday at the White House. KWEX aired the interview in Spanish with a translation of Obama's remarks.

While Obama and the Senate group differ on some key details, both sides are contemplating legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for most of the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

Yes, when Obama leaks his draft bill which equals Rubio's proposal, then Rubio is put into the horrible position of now having to oppose himself. Clearly, it's not reasonable to have to stand there and admit that his position on the issue is quite similar to that of the President. How is Rubio supposed to get past the crazies for the 2016 nomination if he is caught in any form of agreement with Obama?

Rubio's problem isn't that the bill he is co-authoring is similar to the President's proposal. His problem is that he is associated with the bill in the first place. <_<

The only shot Rubio has in the GOP would come from his appeal with Hispanics. To earn that, he has to support immigration reform. Supporting that will turn off the Republican base. Rock here, hard place there. In between, there's Marco. This is why he's vocal on the President's proposal despite the fact that it is an almost exact copy of his. Confusing the crazies in his party is the only shot he has.

The Reagan amnesty will continue to rear its ugly head in Republican circles. The only way they will consider another amnesty program will be if the border is secured first with a piranha filled moat, bordered by miles of razor wire and antipersonnel mines, and finally, a free fire fire zone where gun nuts can get their freak on shooting at anything that makes it through, including coyotes and each other.

Then, it will be English proficiency tests for anyone looking for a job, tamperproof federal ID card for anyone but US citizens that look like real Americans, who won't have to show anything, even to buy a gun. Amnesty means you pay all your taxes first, and go back to wherever you came from, wait ten years, pay $10,000 fine, and get back in line with everybody else.
