I watched the news conference video and it was interesting to see the change of expressions and his voice inflections

Your depth, It's simply amazing how you can take a facial expression and turn it into what somebody is actually thinking. Are you psychic? your ability to do this is quite astounding. Steve guess what I am thinking? I know you cant see my expressions or hear my voice inflections, I would guess a person with these power's should'nt be a problem. ;)

Bush likely had no choice but to fire Rumsfeld - the administration probably knew some time ago that the election was going to end badly, and they needed a fall guy. To be fair, that's not new to politics and certainly not exclusive to GWB. Tony Blair has done a few things like that - kept in office ministers like Stephen Byers, David Blunkett and Peter Mandelson, only to fire them as 'damage limitation'.

Bush would have had a much tougher time with the new House and Senate had he not gotten rid of Rummy. There's a price for everything after all...

That would be an observation. You know.. like the observation you made that this is anti-american ;)

For me, American is not some thing that only lives in symbols, such as the flag, the pledge, the larger-than-life images of the founders (all of which are meaningless because they obscure the beauty with a bunch of empty phrases). No, America is the here and now, the blood spillled by those excluded from the political process, and the past which is rich and more than just a list of military victories.

There's a vast difference between the "lie" Bush told about firing Rumsfeld and the lie Clinton told during his impeachment process.

Clinton was under oath, where you swear to tell the truth, and doing anything other than such is called perjury. Bush was under no such obligation, and he merely covered up the situation about Rumsfeld. I know these differences are difficult for many Democrats to understand or handle, since they seem to have a blind, illogical, and uncontrollable hatred of Bush and anything having to do with his administration; however, if you look at the situation objectively, you'll soon realize that Bush told nothing more than a "white lie" at worst.

I think it's almost amusing that the left attacked Bush for keeping Rumsfeld, and now they attack him again for letting him go. I don't think anything Bush can do with make the left happy except committing suicide. Even that probably wouldn't do it, as Cheney would become president then.

Anyway, if you're a liberal Democrat, just be happy (for once) that your party won in Congress and that Bush let Rumsfeld go. Stop complaining and enjoy the situation.

Oh, and we don't know if Rumsfeld was "fired" or he asked to be relieved from his position. Rumsfeld has requested to leave his post in the past, and Bush has refused him. So it's possible that this time, Bush accepted.

erekose, TO ME, the flag, the pledge of allegiance, and these kinds of things all are part of the beauty of america. They are not empty phrases, I have never really thought about how someone that was'nt born here thought about it. I can see you are equally passionate about your beliefs.

I have a hard time with that mainly because Clinton's lie did not have anything to do with his record as president. Clinton perjured himself over an embarrassing personal issue, NOT an issue directly linked with his performance as President.

His lie made the situation worse for himself, but its very arguable whether the 'affair' itself was grounds for impeachment. It always seemed like grasping at straws to me.

Nice try, but here's is the bit you perhaps didn't pay attention to:

Basic reading comprehension comes before interpretation - not...only. In other words, not exclusive to. ;)

In fact isn't that kind of along the lines of your argument:

That argument is silly. If a sitting President openly admits in a press conference that he deliberately lied for his own political advantage, that should bear weight on public opinion of his character...period.
