Does the petitioner HAVE to use tax transcripts (calling in to get them etc) or can they use their tax returns? By tax returns I specifically mean the PDF copy of what they submitted each year that is generated by their tax program.

Yes you can, but you must also send a copy of the W-2 forms and all schedules and statements that you received like interested earned from banks, dividends from investments, profits/losses from sales etc. Only your Federal returns not the state.

P.S. Personally, I found the transcripts easier. They were free, easy to order, and I got them quickly. Just sayin'.

If we use the transcripts do we NOT have to include all those other items?

You DO NOT have to include those other items. One of the reasons I decided to use the transcripts. I also avoided a lot of photo copying.

My mother is my co-sponsor and her actual returns with all supporting documents are unbelievably thick. The tax transcript is much much shorter and an account of what you actually submitted to the IRS, it seems to hold more weight.

They didn't want my tax transcripts or W-2s for my K-1 interview, however I submitted the last 3 years worth of transcripts with the AOS packet.
