My fiance and I met as graduate students living in different countries. He's now finished his program, and I (the USC) am still finishing my PhD. Since my plan is to finish my dissertation in the couple of months before our planned wedding date (August 2013), does anyone have suggestions for how to deal with the affidavit of support form? The whole reason we're waiting until after my defense is because his current job (abroad) will be ending around the same time, so we can finally pursue employment together in the same country.

I am currently employed as a graduate assistant and miraculously have a salary greater than the 125% cutoff for support, BUT I'm hoping to hightail it out of here with my PhD before we marry. I do not yet have a job offer for post graduation, since that's still about 6 months away... but a PhD in my area means I'm highly employable and will almost certainly have a decently paying job by the time we get married.

So, does anyone have input for what I should be doing with this affidavit of support? Thanks a lot!

Your fiance will need to show your affidavit of support at the time of the interview for his K-1 in Paris. What will matter to the Consular Officer will be your current income (having assets may help the CO's decision).

If you want to play it safe in case you don't have a job at the time of his interview (which, from your timeline, should be sometimes during next Spring), your fiance can have a co-sponsor, that will have to be a USC too.

Be aware that you will have to fill in a new affidavit of support once your fiance will be in the US, when he will have to adjust his status (after your marriage).
