Good morning to all!

This is my first time to send balikbayan box to the philippines. I'm planning to include a laptop and a tablet inside the box with those other goodies I'm sending to my parents and siblings.

Wondering if anybody tried it already and if your family recieved it?

There is a consolidator someplace in Boston that consolidates balikbayan boxes into a container and then shipes it overland to California and then to the Phils from there. Does anyone know the phone number of the person who does this in Massachusetts?

I was wondering if I could ship a roto-tiller that way. Garden way makes a very tiny one which disassembled would fit in the box easily.

No issues here sending electronics. Just make sure you research the shipper, they have had an increase of companies that have had issues getting freight released at customs. Most of the time they dont pay the GOVT taxes, and they will not release the container until it is paid. There was an article a month or so ago on the GMA News website.

You may want to Google search that, I'm not particular with east coast forwarders to west.

I've sent a large variety of items, from electronics to household appliances. I've never even had a box opened, so nothing removed and never lost a box. I have no experience with rototillers... but I don't believe it would be a problem. YMMV

They can get very iffy at customs sometimes, I hear they will confiscates goods, charge you taxes and fees for what they deem as "new merchadise". Then I've heard of cases where they won't even care. My friend sent over a Yamaha A/V Receiver and Bose Speaker set without any issues. If the items themselves look preowned i.e not in boxes that look like they can be resold you will be less likely to create any attention. But as a rule of thumb when we send balikbayan boxes we don't put anything into it that we wouldn't bring with in Check-In Luggage on an airplane.

It is not legal to ship electronics in a balikbayan box, doing so can cause problems if detected during customs inspections. You take a big risk doing so, they may get it and they may not. Better to send money and let them buy in the Philippines.

WHAT ARE ALLOWED IN “BALIKBAYAN BOXES”?

Non-commercial goods or goods not in commercial quantity strictly for personal use only, such as: wearing apparel, clothing, foodstuffs/grocery items/canned goods; the value of which must not exceed US$500.00

You can pretty much get by with anything in a Balikbayan box. I have sent all kids of stuff. Cameras, Cell Phones,. My buddy is the local LBC rep. Hes says people routinely send TV's , DVD's etc. You should see a pile of those things taped up and ready to go. They don't open them and go thru them.

Now if you try it with FEDEX or DHL you are going to have problems.

I have sent a couple of gadgets before, luckily it wasn't checked by the US and Philippine Customs...

However, here's an advisory on ALL shippers now:

*** IMPORTANT NOTICE ***

*** Shipping Electronic Devices ***

Just recently, US Customs implemented a policy on electronic devices such as the following: Laptops, Kindle eReader, ipads, mobile phones and the like or those devices that can store information or that has installed software and applications. US Customs have been inspecting all electronic devices that would fall under that category. According to them, sending such devices is not prohibited. However, devices that may contain data are subject to scrutiny as they may compromise national security. That said, we are asking you to refrain from sending such items until we can resolve matters with the US Customs. If you want to continue to ship such electronic devices, you do so at your own risk. Please be warned that losses or damages that may result from Customs inspections will not be covered by insurance.

Its a risk, but if you're willing to risk it, then by all means,...
