Also notable is that small children fed entirely on vegan/macrobiotic diets have a higher rate of nutritional deficiencies for comparable income/social status.

A friend of mine here at work, his brother-in-law is a vegetarian (not vegan), and he's raising his 2 /12 year old daughter vegetarian as well. He often gives his daughter to his sister (my friend's wife) to babysit, and the poor kid more than half the time has diarrhea.

Being vegan or vegetarian is an adult choice. It shouldn't be forced on children.

You know who else it shouldn't be forced on? Dogs. I actually know some vegans who feed their DOGS vegan food. It's a fukking animal already! C'mon! The dog does not look healthy, but you cannot reason with a vegan.

PS Charles, I respectfully decline to answer which highways I have been down, if that is the question. :)

Dogs don't necessarily need MEAT (I have seen dogs raised lacto-veg or lacto-ovo-veg which lived for 10-17 years with few problems), but vegan is not feasible due to the dog's intrinsic design (between omnivore and pure carnivore).

And you forgot about CATS--which ARE pure carnivores (or maybe you didn't: to actually try this, one would have to always confine the cat, not letting it roam a bit--which will greatly stress both cat and "owners").

Please tell me you're kidding. Otherwise, please tell me you're immediately calling the ASPCA to report this abuse.

Dogs are carnivores, they have to eat food at least derived from meat.

Are you saying that dairy products are derived from meat?

Dogs CAN be raised on grains, legumes AND DAIRY (if you want to raise the dog meatless, the last is mandatory).

OMG!!! :o Please tell me you were kidding, or at least promise me to never, ever adopt a dog (or cat).

I've (sadly) seen a lot of puppies with paraparesis due to the lack of ANIMAL PROTEIN in their diet.

BTW, dairy products aren't a good option - their digestive system usually have trouble with COWS' MILK proteins.

No, I wasn't joking. Two of my relatives had dogs (one a "large pom", the other a 90% alsatian-10% cocker) which were raised on cooked-rice/bread/biscuits, cooked-dal and milk.

The dogs lived 15 (pom) and 11 years (alsatian) and appeared healthy enough.

Cats are purely carnivorous (and have predatory instincts to boot), so not even an option.

I though vegans had respect for animals. Isn't owning an animal considered slavery?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Dog biscuits? I'm afraid I don't know what is cooked-dal. I'm not being sarcastic, in case you're wondering, I really don't know and would like to learn.

"Appeared healthy" and actually be healthy are two different things. The two dogs you mentioned lived less than average for each breed. I'd say they had some nutritional problems. You see, most of the food you mentioned are carbohydrates, and dogs cannot digest starch.

I believe the current belief is that we should be the best slave owners we can, and then let them all die out. Neuter and spay them all.

I'm pro-neuter/spay, but my dog is currently sitting on his special bed, chewing his high-end flavored bone, on a heated floor. If that's slavery then I'm jealous.
