Thanks for everyone chiming in. I am trying to plan and get my ducks in a row. He is a smart kid. His mother told me he asked where she got money because she isn't working. ( We decided for Lena to stay home when he got out of school for summer. Her mother has dementia and can't watch him. Lena explained that day care would cost almost as much as she made. I send her money every week.) She told him I send her money every week. He looked at her and said "My father doesn't send money does he?" Pretty smart for a six year old. They should be here for Christmas and they will have a great Christmas.

Not trying to disrupt.....but....be very careful how you two talk about or even mention any of this weekly monetary support you are sending her.

It is not common to have to send regular monies to FSU. Isn't child care free like in Russia?

This can be and has been a red flag for the Embassy, including Kiev.

From what I found out there is no free day care in Ukraine after per-school. I support her and her son because she is my wife.

I have rarely heard of it being an issue and NEVER an issue for a wife, for a fiancee I have heard of it but, it is unusual for Kiev and was usually related to something else or there were other issues. I did send money after we were engaged and after we had filed the petition mostly to pay addl. costs of relocating, English tutoring for Pasha. Alla refused any money before that time and after that only amounts we discussed and agreed on for known expenses. I had evidence of sending the money with me at the interview but they never looked at it or discussed it. Non-issue for us.

Once she was here and we were married...that situation changed considerably.

That's great. We don;t talk about the father but I can tell you that no phone calls come in from him and none go out, unless someone has a calling card they aren't telling me about and I highly doubt that. He is MIA and has been for a long time, even though he lives fairly close to where they lived. He crawled into a vodka bottle a long time ago and never came out. Every so often I think I should send him a case of vodka.

Pardon me, I hadn't caught on to your visa type. No problems.

Gary tell your wife Happy Birthday. It brings tears of joy to read what you wrote about your hospital stay. I hope my RUB is that good. And brother you are to young for a heart attack.

She should be here in five or six weeks.

His father is in jail and will be out in 2013. He doesn't know his father but he is close to his fathers mother. We will keep in touch with his grandmother. I plan to send pictures and letters once a month. Lena was reluctant to tell his grandmother about him leaving. When see did tell her about moving to the U.S. When Lena did tell the grandmother she was supportive. She loves her grandson enough to let him go for a better future.

I blame it on McDonald's. They introduced the Big Mac when I was at a very impressionable age and I met my Big-Mac-Hating Ukrainian wife a bit too late. The surgeons report they took an entire Big Mac out of one of my coronary arteries. McDondald's is denying any liability. (of course)

We have had the same reaction from our Grandmother. The woman never did anything but live for her daughter and two grandchildren and she was very happy they were going to live in a "clean place" Donetsk is known far and wide for its heavy pollution and disproportionate cancer rates. She was thrilled we live on a "clean lake with lots of grass" We send her lots of photos and especially she is proud of her grandson's educational achievements. She has photos and newspaper clippings (of HS honor roll listings) all over her walls in her flat.

She is walking about 10 ft in the air still from the news that Sergey is an asst. professor of Physics at Rice University "in America!" and that "the Americans" are paying for him to be a "doctor" She was teaching him math when he was 3 years old. :D

In 3 years your wife can be a citizen and bring her mom here if she wants to.

We hope Alla's mom will be joining us in 2013. That's the idea.
