So just an introduction, I met my fiance while she was an exchange student here from Italy in 2010. I've since visited twice for 3 months at a time and she has come back once more for an additional 3 months. We submitted our petition in may and got our response ~5mo later.

I am working on filing the affidavit of support. I am currently unemployed (just graduated from school in May), but have my past tax records (in which I made ~10k) that I can attach. I know for sure that I need a co-sponsor for this, and I have a few options that I would like help making sure I don't mess this up.

I can have my mom sponsor her, she makes ~50k a year and for tax purposes supports just my sister but has a sizable amount of debt (but good credit). I'm pretty sure on paper the income requirement is okay (she can say she is supplying room and board + ~800 a month perhaps.) but I'm not 100% on if it will clear the "inspectors", especially if they use assets as a requirement (but you can also just use income right?)

Alternatively I have two options. My "step-dad" for 10 years, parents just divorced, makes ~80k has more assets and less debt. Could provide the same probably even more, but I'm not sure that since it is not blood related and my parents are now divorced that it is a strong enough connection.

Lastly, I can use my grandmother, who is retired but has significant assets (savings, 401k, life insurance, house etc.) who is my mom's adopted parent. Not blood related but I think a "close" enough connection?

So I guess advice on what is the best course, and if how close relation to you they are matters?

Thank you for you help in advance. We are very excited to get this through and get married!

Your mother makes well over enough to support your fiance, your sister and a few others. There is no need to include assets. You will have to fill out the I134 as well even though you dont have enough income. Good luck.

Thanks a lot, just the validation by someone else is a weight off my shoulders :).

I am also confused about what needs to be supplied, the instructions aren't super clear.

Here it says: "Evidence should consist of copies of any of the documents listed below that applies to your situation"

But then it says, "submit in duplicate evidence of income and resources, as appropriate"

The first implies only 1 is needed. The second implies one of 2 things. You need 2 of the 4 listed, or 1 is find but a duplicate of that 1

If it is the latter, being unemployed and without bonds (other than maybe a 401k) - I think I can only satisfy one document proof (bank statements and deposit statements)
