Time frame for CR-1 visa in New Zealand (once NOA2 is received)

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has gone through the CR-1 or IR-1 visa route in New Zealand in the last year or so, and if they could give me an idea of the time frames involved once the NOA2 notification is received?

I'm currently waiting for my NOA2 to come through, but just want to have an idea of when I might be able to join my husband in the States.

I think most of parts will be similar. NVC stage could be 1-2 months.

The difference will be interview date assigned.We just waited 8 days to receive our interview date.

Because it depends how the consulate is busy.

Now, you need to get your case nubmer and invoice id first.(around 1 month to get it from NVC)

I applied for the CR-1 visa at the end of 2009, so it's still awhile ago, but take a look at my time line. I'm sure things haven't changed that much since I went through the process.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. Am still waiting on my NOA2 to come through, but as I have had to return to NZ and move in with my parents - I'd love to have a sense of when I rejoin my husband in the US.

I'll be watching your thread with interest, as although I'm in Australia, I am planning to do the same as you and go to NZ to spend the end of the process with family before moving to the USA.

It looks like the Auckland embassy is pretty fast once NVC is over!

Yes - it does look like its going to be pretty fast. One thing I've found wonderful about the consulate in Auckland, is that they are really responsive by email (and really helpful). They sent out both package 3 and 4 together as they knew I was in a hurry to get to the US, which meant that I got my visa appointment much sooner.

HI KiwiJanet I was wondering what exactly you said in your email to get things to speed up.

Our case has been completed at the NVC as of the 19th October and we really want to be in the US for Christmas; we've got pet's to arrange flights for as well as our own plus my medical in Chch.

scott/jess, if its of interest, I wrote the consulate, and they said they could request the file early from the NVC, and gave a 'tentative' interview appointment to me(assuming they get the file in the next few days which the consulate advise they should without a problem then I get to keep this appointment) they gave me the 20th of November. I only advised that we hoped to be gone January next year, and I was given the aforementioned advice.

(footnote: of course theres no guarantee for me that I will actually get that appt, in the event NVC is non compliant and doesnt send info sooner...so if your case is already closed, odds are in your favor, and you may get the appt they offered me? fingers crossed for you)

kelnjohn I'm not sure who you were in contact with at the consulate but both times we emailed them asking for an appointment or even to see if I can schedule my medical we were told that they can not in any way schedule our interview until the NVC sends them our file which according to you is complete bogus.]

It is unfortunate and very very frustrating that they are unable/willing to help us out like they did you even though we have extenuating circumstances requiring us to be out of NZ by mid January.

So when I emailed the US consulate, they had already contacted me to say that they had my file. I told them my time frame for getting back to the US and they were very nice and sent both packets 3 and 4 together to speed up the process...

With my application, I actually did a direct consular filing (as I was living in London). This really speed up the process as I was able to file directly at the US embassy in London and was able to bypass the NVC.

So I had my interview last Tuesday. The interview was pretty easy - I would say I was in and out in about an hour. Most of the time was simply waiting... First I went up to the immigration visa window and it was simply a matter of quickly going through my paperwork and supplying originals of anything I had only previously sent copies of (i.e. my birth certificate). After that I paid my visa fee. Some more waiting, and then it was time for my interview. Again it was really just someone checking over my paperwork. I believe I was only asked two questions "Was I going to change my name?" and "Where did I meet my husband?"

Today my passport, complete with visa and immigration file (to hand to the officer when I enter the US) arrived in the mail :-)

I did DFC in 2005 when we moved to the US the first time; they really screwed things up removing that option for a lot of countries.

Since I have done both DCF and also gone through NVC I can personally vouch that the NVC sucks; complications after complications and the waiting times, our file was on someones desk sitting waiting to be closed out for a month! incompetence!.
