Hi folks, I'm looking for a simple answer here. My husband is self-employed and so he doesn't have W-2, 1099, pay stubs, or anything that you would normally get when you work for someone else.

We are planning on sending his tax return for 2011 and form 1040 Schedule C (Profit or Loss from business) and I believe we ought to be okay.

I have been researching this and I myself believe we are good but I am still a bit paranoid lol. So are we good? Yes or No?

If no, what else are we missing?

Bank statements from his business account or personal account? Is this crucially required or just "optional"?

I'm asking because his balances (personal and business) are pretty low (he met income requirement though), it's kinda embarrassing to show or I'm afraid it might raise doubts, doesn't it?

Is it really needed or just something optional?

None of us like to expose our financial situations, and I am sure many more here are much more embarrassed than you and your husband.

Believe me, there is a reason the government wants to see this information. It is mandatory to prove that he is capable of supporting the both of you without government assistance.

I'm confused - where does it say bank statements are mandatory? We included none.

The I-864 specifically states this information is optional and is NOT REQUIRED if the total income exceeds the Federal Poverty Guidelines. page 5, part 7 of the I-864 or page 8, part 7 of the I-864 instructions.

I misunderstood your post - thank goodness because I was planning for an RFE - sorry about that!

Bank statements are "optional" for those who may be needing to show more strength in their financial ability to support their beneficiary.
