Hi, I've been using this forum for information since I first applied for the K1 Visa and it has been very useful, thanks to everyone who contributes to this site, but I couldn't find any real straight answer from searching the forums about my current situation.

To begin.. some background information.

I (in the UK) work as a freelancer (for the last three months) and have approx £25k in the bank,

My fiancee (In the US) was recently made redundant, is on unemployment benefit until october (approx $1800 per month) and has approx $15k in the bank,

When we found out that she was being made redundant we quickly asked her sister to be our co-sponsor, her sister agreed to do it and makes a little over the 125% needed through working two teaching jobs. Unfortunately she is having so much trouble getting hold of the letters from her bosses stating her wage, permanency etc, since she has to apply for them through the LA educational system and it can take a while.

When I phoned the embassy to find out if they had received my packet 3, I asked them if it would be possible to postpone the interview if we can't get the forms from my future sister-in-law in time and he said that would be fine, we can delay it for up to a year.

My question is, is there any other way we could get through the interview if we don't get those forms in time, in our current position?

Cheers,

Matt

If your future sister-in-law works for LA Unified School District, she can verify or request her employment information via http://www.theworknumber.com. LA Unified School District uses this online system since 2000. However, I am not so sure if this Verification of Employment can be used for I-134. The verification will provide the detail of how much she's making and other detail of her employment.

Here is the the detail to access it. http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/lausd/offices/personnel/verification/pdf/brochure.pdf

Does she have a tax return showing enough income? How about some pay slips? or bank statements showing direct deposit from the school district? One thing is good for London and two is plenty. They will take anything that proves the income. No specific requirements as long as you prove it. I would take 2 things that are easy to get.

Thanks DandK I'll take a look into that site and ask her about it.

And thank you Nich-Nick I thought the letter from the employer was needed (glad to hear it's not), she does have tax returns and pay slips I'll just use these instad.

Thank you both again,

Matthew

With £25k in the bank, you have a good chance of self-sponsoring. You might want to take some documentation of your savings and give it a go. You don't fill out any forms. Take multiple months of statements so it shows a history of that being your money. There's no published amount that is acceptable. It is not 3x or 5x the poverty level as some will tell you. It's whatever the interviewing officer decides is enough. I recall a person on VJ self-sponsoring in London with around 40k dollars and you're up there with the conversion to dollars. You can have the other sponsor info to present if they don't accept it. By the time you adjust status, maybe your fiancé will be employed and your combined assets can be used. If you do self sponsor, please report it in the UK forum and in your review of the interview. That would be so helpful to know the money amount that was accepted.

Here's the London embassy page that talks about self sponsoring. http://london.usembassy.gov/faffidavit.html

Before I write my review, I wanted to thank Nich-Nick.

I've just got back from the Embassy (Had to wait for 6 HOURS!! but I'll get to that in the review), were I successfully self sponsored myself with £27k in the bank (approx $40k+) They asked no questions about it at all, didn't even batter an eyelid. So I think it's safe to say that you can self sponsor yourself for less than 3x poverty level (approx $55k)

Thanks again Nich-Nick

You are most welcome and thank you for coming back and confirming that you were successful. Six hours?? That may be a record for London.
