I hope Buchanan decides to run again. Only person I trust to do or try to do what he says once in office.

Buchanan goes far beyond the divisive demagoguery of Newt Gingrich to really, truly flirt with fascist leadership from time to time. We hate to even say that, because it sounds like something an idiot 19 year old liberal would say, but he keeps flirting, year after year. He makes anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi comments, uses extremist staffers who work with white supremacy groups and militias, and until recently put an anti-Israeli conspiracy rant on his official World Wide Web page.

He has expressed his admiration for Francisco Franco and Joseph McCarthy (not to mention Hitler), and during the Iran Contra scandal said that reporters should be "Americans first and reporters second" - in other words, suppress free speech to help Reagan cover up a scandal.

Several prominent Republicans and conservatives have come to this conclusion. "Flirting with fascism" is how William Bennett described Buchanan. Both William F. Buckley, Joshua Muravchik (a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute) and William Safire (Pat's fellow speech writer on the Nixon staff) have all concluded that Buchanan showed consistent (if carefully worded) hostility toward Jews throughout his public statements. Even Alan Keyes "confronted top Buchanan aides and angrily accused them of appealing to racist and anti-Semitic voters" after the WMUR debate in New Hampshire this year.

I don't think he would have widespread appeal, but I like a lot of his stands on major issues.

I've been reading his latest book, "State of Emergency". He hits the nail on the head with that one.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

A lot of what he has said has been taken out of context and his biggest sin has been pointing out the influence of Israel and it's lobby on U.S. policy.

I have that book on order and have read a couple of others. His books are always backed up with historical facts for what he speaks.

Is the US ready? Yeah I think it is. Is Obama ready? Now that's the million dollar question.

I don't think he is. I'm certain that he will eventually be ready for the job. I really like the guy and hope that he'll make it one day. I remember his speech at the '04 convention very well. It was full of encouragement, intelligence and hope. All the things so sorely lacking at 1600 Penn Ave these days.

Unfortunately, 2008 would seem to be way too soon for him, however. I'd rather see him run when he has a real shot at it. That said, I'd vote and root for him over Hillary any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

On current performance - it seems its irrelevant whether or not a candidate is "ready" for the presidency ;)

6 years - and GWB still isn't ready. Out-of-his-depth and underqualified spring immediately to mind.

By "ready for the presidency", I mean the ability to win the nomination of one of the two parties. If you can pull that off, you've got a very good shot at winning. You could be Barney and it wouldn't matter.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

If the Democrats take over the House and/or Senate I don't want a Democrat anywhere near the Whitehouse.

He'd make a better President than the one we have now.

Other than the MAJOR miscalculation on Iraq he hasn't done that bad. Had 9/11 not occurred things would probably be rolling along just fine. I just don't see Gore having done better job or Kerry having done anything different if he had been handed the mess in Iraq.

I'm a little curious what you mean by miscalculation?

If you mean he miscalculated how long it would take for his (administrations) lies about Iraq that got us there in the first place to be revealed as lies, then I agree....

I do wonder if Gore had of won in 2000 if the events that followed would have been different, meaning 9/11... I am almost certain that IF the events of that day did not change, that we would not have this mess in Iraq but possibly still going after the man that authorized it.
