My friend is working on their I-864 right now and asked me about the AGI but i am unsure what to tell him. He is receiving SS retirement benefits at the same time he is working. Does he need to add his current income at work and his SS benefits as a currents income on I-864? What about the total income in the past 3 years? His SS income was included in tax return but it was not included when they add up the AGI, the AGI alone is his total income or salary at work. And they put his SS benefits on line 17 on tax return. Thanks for the help.

For a 1040 form, add the non-taxable SS to the line 22 figure. For a 1040EZ add the non-taxable SS to the AGI.

For current income add the SS to the current earnings. Document the current SS with an award letter.

Thank you very much pushbrk! I need more clarrification. If we add up AGI and his benefits, I read people receving rfe because of the figures didn't match in the tax return... Do you think it will cause rfe or it is already considered that AGI and SS benefits will be his total income? Thanks.

I don't understand why you are using AGI. That would only be correct if he files a 1040EZ. They know where the SS benefits come into play if you'll follow my instructions.
