Passport card limits space for first and middle names

I received a letter from de DOS this Saturday that my passport application was placed on hold. My first and middle names combined exceed 18 characters for which is no space available on the passport card. The name on the book and card need to match. The DOS is giving me two options:

1) withdraw my application for the passport card and receive a book with names written in full.

2) come up with a shorter version of my name within the spacing requirements.

If I choose for option 2 the names on my passport documents will match my SS-card (which by coincidence was already shortend to middle initials) but not my CON and my drivers license as those documents have my name written in full.

The passport card benefits me as I live in Arizona where border patrol posts are common and it makes travel to Canada easier too. Maybe I just miss the good old GC which easily fits in a wallet.

I have no problem shortening my name middle names to their initials but I was wondering if anyone has negative experiences as a result of such change??
