"Client Copy" of Tax return OK for I-864

Hello,

Long story short I moved to China in 2009. I did not know that I was responsible for filing taxes on the money I made here so for 2009, 2010, and 2011 I did not file taxes.

As my wife and I began the green card application process it became clear that tax returns would be needed to accompany the I-864 form.

I can't tell you the amount of headache that I've gone through trying to get these returns done. I tried by myself but simply couldn't wade through the paperwork and hired an accountant here in Beijing to do so.

On the I-864 form it asks if you've included the "required photocopy or transcript of Federal tax return". My wife has a co-sponsor and she sent transcripts, which don't look anything like a normal tax return, along with her completed I-864 form.

I, on the other hand, was under the impression that I needed those transcripts as well. But it mentions "required photocopies" of the tax return.

The accountant that we had prepare the returns for those three years said she will be including "client copies" of the returns. Will it be sufficient to photocopy those and include them with the I-864 or do I need to complete the filing first and then request transcripts?

Resolved. I have been in contact with another American in Beijing who went through this and he's confirmed that copies of the returns will be sufficient. That's a relief. Almost ready to file the I-130.

ya, it's either / or .

Either copies of the tax returns, all paperwork submitted to IRS

or

the IRS Transcript.

Good on you for getting it sorted, la.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
