I know that I can change my last name to take my husband! Problem is he has two ... as is usual in Mexico we take both our mom's and dad's ... for example his name is Juan Daniel Ramirez Solis .... can we take out one so he only has Juan D. Ramirez and mine change it to Rebeca Ramirez????

I don't know if this is possible?? On our next form (I-485) have the new name (married name) and apply for the ssn before he changes his name and then change it to the married name

His legal name is both. That is what is on his birth certificate, passport and K-1 visa, correct? He cannot just change his legal name without going through the courts. He will have the opportunity to change it for free if and when he files for citizenship. Does your state allow you to put what name you will take after marriage on your license? In my state it does not. I tried to take only his first last name, his family name, but I could not get my drivers license because if I was to take my husband's name after marriage, I had to take it exactly as it was on the marriage certificate. He put both last names on the marriage license because that is his legal name and it matches his passport, SSN, visa, I-94, birth certificate, etc. So anyway, I have both last names legally, but I still just use the first one for more casual things that do not require all the legalities of putting both names.

If your state allows you to choose what name you will go by when you get the marriage license, then you might be able to list your name there using just his first last name as your married name. His name legally will still have both.

You said you don't want him to have 2 last names. Does he want to keep them both? When I let my husband know he could change his through the courts or wait until he applies for citizenship and drop the last one then for free, he told me yes, he could, BUT he does not want to change his name because that is his given name and his culture and he doesn't feel like he wants to give one up just to conform to the way things work here typically. I cannot blame him, and he should be the one to decide if he needs or wants to change his name. Conforming to the American norm is not enough of a reason to him.

Just wanted to add, that if you live in a state that allows a man to change his through marriage as well as the woman, then you might be able to do it that way too. As far as I know, very few states allow the man to change his name through marriage though. You can check to see if your state allows it or not.
