Hi All!

I am trying to get my fiance (who has never flown before) ready for his upcoming trip on the 21st.

First of all he is flying Trukist Airlines. Has anyone flown with them before? Can you share your experience? When I flew from Islamabad to Abu Dhabi I had to gather my luggage and go thru security and check them again in Abu Dhabi. How big is the airport in Istanbul?

Also has anyone had their POE be Dulles Airport in Washington DC? If so I'd love to hear your thoughts on how that went.

Hi All!

Give PLENTY of time at the Istanbul airport. It's massive, confusing and the second security point for flights to the USA take at least 1 hour. They even have a serious wait to into the airport building if your original starting point is Istanbul. I know that all the Turkish Airlines planes are fairly old and somewhat uncomfortable compared to other major US airlines. But their deals are incredible. Hard to pass up.

I have not done a POE in this airport, however, like most I would bet that you should give plenty of time for this also. Don't freak out if you're waiting. Just be patient and REALLY excited :) CONGRATS!!!

My dad traveled from Dulles to Islamabad (roundtrip) via Turkish airlines back in January. He had no problems and liked the serivce. There was a little delay from Istunbul to Islamabad but not significant. He had no problems on his way back either. I hope this helps.

My husband also traveled for the first time when he came here. What we decided to do was fly him with no luggage, only a carry on bag. We bought any clothes he needed here and his family wanted to arrange shipping for his clothes to the US, but he decided he didn't need anything. It worked out great. Ot was less time and confusion.

I traveled from Dubai to Prague via Turkish Airlines and it was great! However, if your hubby smokes there is NO Smoking zone inside Istanbul airport, but we managed to give the toilet attendant 2 Euros and we were sorted. Everybody who was a smoker did that. Hope this helps...

I am curious about when they arrive to the airport in Istanbul from Islamabad. He will be checking his luggage and I am wondering if he will be required to gather it after his plane lands in Istanbul and then recheck it before he get on his connecting flight. This is what I have to do when I go thru Abu Dhabi and it is a big pain. If they actually transfer it to his connecting flight for him that will be much simplier. Anyone have experience with baggage from Islamabad to Istanbul and connecting flights?

compared to other airports its not that big, well istanbul was always my first stop but, there are people near the carousals who speak english :/ but i dont know if you fiance speaks english, and also you can google maps of the airport. he should be fine, they tell him in the plane what he needs to do when he gets to the airport, since hes flying out of the country (which is the language he speaks) they should announce it in his language too.

it can be confusing, i mean any airport can be confusing, just tell you fiance to be calm, but other international airports are way bigger i think, like i am going to frankfurt, it reminds me more of a mall than an aiport.

You make a great point! There are always helpful, knowledgeable people at airports that can help him find his way and great idea about finding the maps on the internet. I pulled them down and looked at them and the airport doesn't appear to be one of the more massive ones I have been to. Pretty straight forward. I am thankful that his English is very good. :) Thanks again to all for your responses! Just trying to find things to make his trip more easy and ways to give him tips to mentally prepare. Thank goodness he is one of the most easy going men I know!. :)

Main thing to say about Istanbul airport is the free wi-fi which is very handy. I found it very easy to get through, well labelled, didn't have to wait too long at security, customs etc. Turkish airlines however... personally I wasn't a fan but as people have already said, they're very cheap and get you from point A to B...just! Enjoy the flight.

I would call the airline. They should be able to answer this for you. I never had to transfer my own luggage in Abu Dhabi. I flew Etihad, though.
