Announcement: Four Canadian Consulates in the U.S. Close

By Sean Mitton

With the recent announcement that Foreign Affairs Depart of Canada has received a six percent cut to it's spending in the March 29th budget, it was thought that changes would be made to a few of the existing 21 consular trade offices.

It was learned at the end of April that the Consulates in Raleigh, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Anchorage would be closing. A small satellite office in Princeton, New Jersey will also be closing.

These changes will have no effect on Consular services.

Trade opportunities will now have more of a regional focus in areas where those Consulates were closed. Trade will continue to focus on vertical markets such as Life Sciences, ICT (Information & Communications Technology), Aerospace, Agriculture, Infrastructure and Clean Tech.

Closes will take effect over the summer months and there was no word on any changes regarding Honorary Consul locations.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Surprised that the Phoenix one will be closing due to the large number of Canadian snowbirds in the area.

Edit: Ah, I read again and see the Consular service isn't affected.

I know that our Trade division of CBSA was majorly affected with the budget cuts.
