Hi Everyone!

I will need to ship a small crate of my belongings when it comes time to move. I'll need maybe a crate of 1 metre squared or slightly bigger. If anyone can recommend a company they used and were happy with? I've rang a couple of companys and they have said they would email me back with a quote, but I've heard nothing.

Thanks for any help!

For me my main concern was that I didn't want other people handling my stuff (I've had heard enough horror stories about goods being damaged) so decided to go for a lift-van (wooden crate, that you load yourself, is then sealed at your home and shipped as is in a big container, only opened when / if custom in the US insists on an inspection - unfortunately they were not able to drop off the crate at my house in the US so the delivery guys unloaded the crate into the house, but at least I was there to make sure everything was handled carefully).

Was reasonably happy with

http://www.ewepack.com/

Cost for 1 x 2 x 2 m (appr.) including custom clearance was around 1700 GBP.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out and see if they do a smaller size.

You're welcome - the price they quoted me last year was 1500 (plus minus) but I had to pay some extra when customs wanted to xray the entire shipping container, that payment went to the US handler.

They do do custom sizes which should be cheaper and I think there are a few other companies out there that do lift vans from what I recall, but ewepack at least got me a quote in a timely manner so that was something I counted for them.

Good luck!

Just had a thought, what about paying for excess baggage on the plane? US Airways charges $70 for a second 50lb bag and $200 for a third 50lb bag (first one is free). Could work out a lot cheaper and hassle free with waiting for it and clearing customs etc.

There's been much discussion of this over the years, and there's an old(er) though occasionally updated thread on this: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/128548-yes-its-another-shipping-thread/

It would be great if this could get pinned at some point. We used Excess Baggage and were really happy with the service on both ends.

Do you know if they collect from a storage unit?

I am moving in (with the kids) to my grandfathers to save money... So I am planning on sticking my boxes in storage.

They will collect from wherever you tell them to! Give them a call and confirm. They didn't break a single thing in the move. Wish I could say the same about the movers who transported the same boxes 9 months later across the US.mad.gif

Yes, alot will go into suitcases, but there was some larger things I wanted to take aswell. Been thinking about it and maybe it's time to let go and just sell them (a dolls house, wedding dress from my first marriage and some of my sons toys). The important thing is that I'm going to be with the man I love and these are just posessions. I guess the money from selling these things will cover the excess baggage.

I also have nice parents that will store some things, so I can pick them up later. It's tough getting rid of things

Just what I'm doing (but with fewer suitcases), a charity shop near me has had suitcases loads of clothes and books.
