It's not true. How well do you understand India? Your fiancee should know what this means. The cops are expecting a specific set of next steps on her part, as long as she complies she will get her certificate.

Hmmm... in my husband's country it is called "baksheesh". Might be the same word in India...

Same word. Alternatively, rishwat. If the OPs fiancee didn't catch on to this (surprising) then I am sure the lawyer will wise her up

Absolutely...! :) bribes work it out :) Worked out fine in the case of Delhi VJers

By the way Tim, was she asked to get a police certificate for all the residences of the past 5 years or just the one she has been living in recently?

10-19-2006 Sent I-129

She went to the local office. They also told her they dont do them there. She must go to the regional office in Thane. We know she must also go to the office that issued her passport. Oh you were talking about a bribe, sorry i didnt understand. Yeah, we would do that too. LOL

Thanks for the info!

She has been in that same area all her life, except for 1 month in Dubai UAE and I dont think that counts.

You're right it doesn't count. Talk to the lawyer uncle, Indian vakils usually know the right people to get documents produced. Bribery is essential but you have to bribe the right people. It is very common that you'll bribe the wrong guy and no document is generated from the mistake. Get her vakil uncle to find out who the right people are, lawyers there tend to know this sort of stuff.
