Hello,

I am in the process of gathering all my paper work to bring my Russian fiancee to the USA. I have a question about translating documents from Russian to English. I've heard that if it's in Russian, then it doesn't need to be translated. I don't know if this is true or not. Does anyone know if the documents need to be translated?

Thank you!!

Any documents submitted to USCIS need translating.

However if this is correspondence items like emails letters or chats used as evidence of communications, this does not need to be translated.

As for translations..

(a) Document Translations .

All documents submitted in support of an application or petition must include complete translation into English. In addition, there must be a certification from the translator indicating that the translation is complete and accurate and attesting to his or her competence as a translator. See 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) .

Translator need not be a professional, just someone conversant in English and the foreign language, that will "certify" it by noting that they are conversant, and stating it is an accurate translation and signing their translation.

ALL documents submitted to USCIS MUST be in English or have an English translation. For the petition this would mean your fiancee's divorce certificate (if any). For the AOS after your fiancee arrives, this will be additional documents, including her birth certificate.

The consulate in Moscow will accept Russian language documents.

Here is the bottom line...ALL her important documents will need to be translated, now or later. In order to live and wor in the USA or go to school, she is going to need to provide medical records, school records, etc., and they will need to be translated. You do not need to do it NOW but you will eventually.

Ok very good, thank you for the clarification. Do you know where I can find a certified translator? I'm in Russia now, but can I find one in the USA?

Thanks again!

Alla is a translator. PM me.
