Query by beneficiary about what information to give to US Border Control

Hi everyone, I have a query I wanted to post to get some advice. Here's a little background - I am the beneficiary from the UK and my boyfriend is the US citizen and we after many years of dating on and off we made the decision last December to go through the K1 process so we can be together. Unfortunately I am required to finish a law training contract in the UK before I can move to the US which is due to finish around February/March 2013. Because of this, I originally thought we wouldn't need to file the paperwork for the visa until later this year and because I am not able to visit very often we had planned to get engaged some time over this summer.

However, in February of this year I started researching the K1 visa process on this website and quickly realised what a lengthy process it was and that if we wanted to have the visa ready by the time my contract ends then we needed to submit it asap (as we also have complications in our case). I had planned a visit for a week to the US a few weeks later in March of this year and in the short time we had, we put the I-129F application together and posted it whilst I was visiting him in March. Because of the short notice and change of plans my boyfriend hadn't had an opportunity to save up for an engagement ring and actually propose to me during this trip.

I have planned to go back to the US in two weeks time for another visit and I think the proposal will likely happen then (although I have been forbidden from asking any questions about it lol). My query is what to say to the Border Control when I land. We are engaged from the point of view of the K1 because we made the mutual decision to plan to marry prior to submitting the I-129F. But as far as I am concerned until he has proposed and I have a ring I don't feel right about referring to him as my fiance. When I am asked the reason for my visit I will say vacation but i'm not sure how to respond when I am asked who I am visiting, fiance or boyfriend? During my last visit I stated boyfriend and I wasnt asked any further questions but at that point we hadn't filed the I-129F. Now that we have filed it I am worried that if I call him my boyfriend that I am being untruthful but if I refer to him as my fiance that they will ask when he proposed and he hasn't yet. Does anyone have any advice?

Many thanks

Have a good day all!

I would say "fiance" because you have applied for a "fiance" visa and one would logically deduce from that, that he is your fiance. But... this is just my opinion :)

I would say fiancé because they have a record you filed a K-1. If they ask when he proposed (and there is a good chance they won't), I would just say, "we decided in (whenever) that we wanted to start planning to get married." My husband and I ARE married and never got engaged, we just decided to get married. It's not a huge deal, you're over thinking it. Good luck. :)

Thanks to you both, my gut feeling was to say fiance. I will bring a copy of the I-129F and proof of my ties to the UK in case I get called into a secondary interview.

Your right I was probably overthinking it, its a hazard of training to be a lawyer I overanalyze everything!

Seriously, but perhaps it's a British thing.

Keep it as fiance. On paperwork you two are seen as 'US Citizen' & 'Alien Finace(e)' (not 'Alien Partner). Don't let your emotions contradict the facts, otherwise it may do more harm than good.

You love him right? Of course you do! Otherwise you two won't file the peition! You know as well as anyone that he will propose to you, he is just being sweet and biding his time and getting you the best ring eva!!!

Relax, enjoy the time you spend with your husband-to-be :)
