They won't call you but they will send you a letter… Some people said they never received it so you can call them if you want. :)

In some countries, case number is important because you can start paying fees ans scheduling the medical as soon as you have it. In my case, it was not very useful to have it (it was only needed in one form). I don't know about your embassy though.

In general, let's say it's good to have it in case you want to call the Department of State to have some update about your case (they will ask for it).

We got our NOA2 at the end of March. It was at the NVC for 12 days, and now is in transit to the consulate. I called them and inquired about: 1. When it arrived at NVC? 2. When it left NVC for consulate? 3. What is the embassy case file number? It took numerous calls (6-10) to get all of the information I needed. Today, I called and was told that the file had been sent to the Guangzhou consulate. I have yet to receive any letter or any written communication from NVC.

It seems that the DOS tends to deal with case file numbers and not USCIS receipt numbers. Though when calling the NVC, they will ask for your DOS case file number or USCIS receipt number. Once I got the case file number, that is all I gave them when inquiring about file status.

Good luck on your visa journey!
