So in Colombia, you have 2 last names... the green card only says one of his last names. I can't remember when we did the application if we put one or two so it may very well be our fault for not putting both names. My husband's Colombian passport says both names. We left for Colombia last week and are coming back to the states tomorrow. we brought extra documentation (marriage license, SSN has both names, K1 visa approval with both names and same alien # etc) so hopefully we won't have any problems.

When we get back, we are thinking we should change the green card to match everything else... anyone done this? will they charge the $365 listed on the USCIS website? Should we even bother? Any thoughts, advice, and experience would be appreciated! thanks!

You will have to pay if it's your error. I made a mistake when I typed my son's middle name - a letter was misplaced- on the I-485 form. I noticed that even though it was correct on the I-765 -EAD- form, they issued the card with the spelling from the I485. When I went to apply for his social security, I had to use it as "other names". For a misplaced letter, I decided to let it be. It is not worth $300. Changing it is up to you. Another thought is that you may chose to do so when you apply for citizenship.

There is actually no error because the US does not recognize the mother's last name, so in this country he will always be first name, middle name and father's last name even if his Colombian passport has both which is the way they do it in most Latin American countries.

There is no need to change everything with the USCIS and pay an extra fee unless he has an emotional attachment to his mother's last name and doesn't feel comfortable only using his father's last name in the US.
