Let's just say that my 12 and a half year old son, who entered on a k-2, isn't really that thrilled anymore about living in the US. Let's just say that his new step-father and him don't always see eye to eye. How much stock does an interviewer take from a kid who is as likely to say one one day that he loves it here and loves living with his new dad, as he is to say that he sleeps in a closet and we're only here so that I can cook and clean for my husband, lol... anything to get sent home? Do I need to be concerned at all? (let's also say that we're really trying to work on the relationship between the two of them)

I would say the people interviewing are trained professionals, and will be able to decipher if what a kid is saying is true or and exaggeration. I wouldn't worry about it too much! 12 years old is practically a teenager, and we all know how parents are constantly "ruining" their teenagers lives by not letting them stay out til 2am or have a car for their birthday! lol! dramatic.... I'm sure it will be fine. :)

I second that, the interviewers are often parents themselves. If they feel friction or unhappyness from him then the won't really put a lot on what he says or will ask him simple questions like where he goes to school etc to just make sure you all live together. Really they don't care if your son is happy or not it's not their problem (is yours though and i understand it can be hard), lots of step kids are not happy at a given time in the new relationship. It took me years to build the relationship I have with mine and still we have some good days and some not so good ones. Relax, it will be fine.

Moving from one country to another, having a new step-parent, and adjusting are very traumatic for kids. As stated by the two previous responses, the IOs are trained and understand that children go through these stages. Don't worry about it. The focus will be on the marriage and not the emotional responses from the kids. All the best.
