Hello all. My wife is Canadian and living with me in the United States. Her mom will be filing her 2011 taxes real soon but because my wife hasn't changed her name on any of her Canadian IDs, should her mom keep everything under her Maiden Name or should she put it in her new name?

You're mother in law is filing your wife's 2011 taxes?

I know from experience here in the US, you need to file your taxes in the name that your social security card is under. If you don't you get hate mail from the IRS saying your name does not match their records and the return will be delayed.

I would highly suggest to file in the name that matches her SIN.

When I did my last Canadian return my accountant advised me to file in my maiden name, since all my Canadian ID was in my maiden name. Also, all my tax documents (ie T4) were in my maiden name.

I called the CRA and used my married name as I have been in the process of switching everything over. I was asked to send a copy of my marriage certificate with my tax return.

I have had no issues at this time.

Good luck!
