SSN still not verifiable by anyone?

I got my SSN in September and since then it hasn't been verifiable by anyone I give it to. This includes the Selective Service online signup system, which I had to apply to by mail because it wouldn't accept my SSN. When I got a job I had to give them a photocopy of my SS card because their system couldn't recognise it. I bought a car last week, 5 months after I was issued the number and they still couldn't verify my number. Has anyone else had this problem? At first I just attributed it to the number being new or systems not having been updated to work with the new randomised SSNs, but I'm still having this problem everywhere.

When my number was rejected by the company doing a background check for my new job I called the helpline.

http://www.ssa.gov/pgm/services.htm

I discovered that my first and second name had been run together in their system (with no space between the two), even though it was formatted ok on the card. And then, because there is a maximum of 15 characters allowed for the first name, the last three letters of the combined names were missing. That meant that when my details were inputted there was a mismatch between the name being entered and the one in the system. I went to the local SSA office and they corrected it and the background check then went through.
