Hello everyone,

I am a US citizen (as of Dec 9, 2011) and I am in the process of petitioning for my family living in New Delhi, India. My parents were married in 1976 in a small ceremony and they never acquired a marriage certificate. In order for me to petition for my father, I need their marriage certificate. I don't know how to go about it? Has anyone had this issue before? If so, I need to know how my father can acquire his marriage certificate?

Thank you!

You can file for a late-registered marriage certificate. I don't know how you do this in your country but in ours, you go to the civil registry office and file it there.

That may be the best bet, if the petitioner can locate the the person officiating the marriage and any witnesses. However, if the marriage was never licensed, the marriage may not be valid. The petitioner has to prove her father was married to her mother at the time the he/she was born for the petition to be approved.
