A passenger in the US was detained for presenting a clear plastic carrier bag

for search which bore the message: "Kip Lawley is an idiot". Security staff

recognised the name of the boss of Transport Security Administration and

were not amused.

When the passenger asked if his actions were covered by the First Amendment,

he was told: "Out there (pointing past the id checkers), not while in here

(pointing down)."

After 25 minutes the passenger was released - after the offending plastic bag

had its photograph taken. There are lengthy and hilarious details on this

frequent flyer forum here.

What sounds really funny is that he was detained for telling the truth.

Based on what the TSA chopf#ck said, the passenger should now plan to return there and place a sign with the same words in fairly large letters on a 8' x 3' board and place it somewhat outside the security-check area--but visible to them. He can now say, "hey, you SAID that the First Amendment covers me outside; that sign is NOT in here!"

What he should do is have a couple thousand buttons made up with that printed on it and hand them out at the airport.

Now of course I wouldn't be surprised if his name some how winds up on the do not fly list and he get hassled everytime he flys.

Nothing like some ####### with a badge thinking he's God.

I can remember asking the (legitimate) question on the Grasmick Forum of whether it would be OK for me to use my Canada citizenship card as ID for a US domestic-only flight. The answer was "just use your licence--you don't want/need to confuse these TSA chopf#cks further".

I read many of the guys posts over on flyertalk. He said he has made quite a stink with security over the past year or so. Many written complaints. He's not on any list 'yet'. He's written his senator, congressman and the TSA. No one has responded so this is his way to fight back. It sounds like other people are going to write the same thing on their baggies.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

 Thanks for the suggestion; I'm seriously considering doing that the next time I fly!

I read the article and comparing this to someone joking about a bomb shows a complete lack of professionalism. Now if he had written .... should die then that should be taken seriously.

To detain someone for voicing an opinion over someone elses IQ or lack there of is completely unprofessional.

Also taking a photo ID displaying a rude gesture should have been handled by the airline company not the police. Personally I would not want anyone working for my company who would think this is proper and of benefit to the customer.
