I love having this place to ask you guys these seemingly silly questions... what do you wear to a fancy wedding when it is butt cold ? I am a Sunny California girl, I have no idea how to go about dressing for cold but nice enough for a wedding shindig.

Do people wear pants or pant suits? or do you go with dresses but layers of leggins underneath?

Please give me the skinny. The wedding is in Ancaster at the Old Mill Inn, it looks really pretty (online)

Thats too funny. Dresses with layers of stockings underneath

When are you going to the wedding?

Its not that cold in Canada that your going to have to dress with so many clothes on that ya cant move.

Just wear a nice dress with nylons will be fine, or if ya feel like wearing a pant suit, do that. Some people dress up really nice, some dont.

This response was a little harsh, ya think! :(

I've found that depending on the location, it could be drafty. So even if the heat is on, you could get blasted with cold air. Make sure that you're going to be comfortable. Layers are good. I always try for something with a jacket or pretty shawl so that I can wear it if necessary. A dressy pant suit is fine too.

Is this a family wedding? Can you also ask a female relative how dressy they will dress?

If you get cold, get your boogy on

I guess I'm thinking about it a lot because I'm going to be meeting ALL my in-laws for the first time at once. I just didn't want to look like the odd man out, and I'm a bit nervous. I have met 2 cousins, but this will be EVERYONE else from all over Canada in one she-bang.

thanks for your help.

Oh yeah. How nerve wracking to meet the in-laws for the first time. And to something where there might be a dress code to boot! Find out how dressy the wedding is going to be. and if you can't get that information then just remember that they don't dress any different than we do (my husband is canadian) and to go with something middle of the road between casual and super dressy. This day and age no longer seems to make a dress a requirement so if you feel more comfortable in a pant suit then i'd say it'd be a go. If the wedding is inside then you don't have to worry too much about getting cold. it isn't THAT cold in Hamilton. But i agree with making sure you have a dressy coat for walking outside or from the car to the building. Don't worry you'll do fine!! I'm sure everyone will be less concerned with what you are wearing than with what your personality is like. Most people would not even be able to tell somebody what you were wearing if they were asked the next day, but they would have plenty of things to say about your personality. Good luck!

Hamilton huh? Hope your dress looks good with snow boots.

That made me laugh out loud because i wore snow boots with my wedding dress in december.

Thanks for the tips... I wrote an email to the 1 cousin I met last weekend and asked what she is wearing. I didn't get to see the original wedding invite as my husband mailed off the reply card and when I asked him about *dress* he said I dunno!

Okay a little perspective please. :P

it isn't THAT cold in Hamilton.

I'm from Vancouver, where there is barely winter. I live in Washington, where there is barely winter. It's like 10 above Celsius and I get whiny from "cold". I know the rest of y'all laugh at it (my family from the Yukon has just about disowned me over my weather issues... :P ), but if you're not used to it, it feels a lot colder than it is. I get into negative Celsius temps and I don't handle at all well. I won't even start commenting on my winter visits to Edmonton. Oy Vey!

Hamilton, as well as the rest of the country, feels *damn* cold to someone not used to it. And the OP is from California.

To the OP: Keep your feet warm...if they get cold that's it. Dunno if you're a hat person, but a nice dress hat (and I don't mean a fou fou one, more like a tam or felt material) that you can wear to and from the car and even with your outfit would help. Warm coat. Find out if the venue is drafty and if so, layers (in multiples if need be). One thing I did was start getting those cape coats. They double as blankets. ;)

Cerise, the non-cold weather Canuck.

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

I'm a big fan of tights -- they're thicker and warmer than nylons, but still stylish and not so thick that you can't wear good shoes. :)

Ooooh! My cousin had his wedding there in the fall! Word of caution: If you're in the function room upstairs, DON'T wear uncomfortable shoes. The ladies rooms are downstairs, and after dancing a while, trudging up and down on sore feet is a killer. Plus, there's this bridge by the parking lot, and it's far too easy to trip on when you're in stilletto-type heels!

As for what to wear, it really depends on the couple...but the Old Mill is pretty fancy, so a long dress with a warm coat would probalby be a good choice. Some of the function rooms have fire places, and tend to be quite warm, so once you're inside you should be fine. :)

I'm so jealous you get to go there! It's beautiful! And the food is delicious! :D There was lovely prime rib at my cousin's wedding and it was sooooo good. Be sure to take a moment to wander around inside, as it's just beautiful. There's a waterfall you can see from an inside bridge, and some lovely old rooms and such. You'll love it. :)
