Not trying to jump the gun, but hoping that our interview on November 23 turns out well, we would like to celebrate by eating somewhere nice afterwards. Do you guys recommend any places close by? We are not familiar with Ermita section of Manila, so we don't know where to start.

Nice doesn't mean it has to be expensive. It can be some off the wall place, but with great food.

Bob

We used to eat at Max's all the time, mainly the Max's in Angeles at SM Clark, but we refuse to go to any Max restaurant after a really crappy, disgusting experience at the SM Clark branch.

We ordered our food and the manager informed us that my fiancee's halo-halo order will not have any leche flan in it since they ran out. She decided not to order it. My brother was with me at the time and he ordered a lumpia shanghai with his order. So were talking and waiting for our food and I start watching one of the waiters cleaning the tables. I started paying attention to him and I see him scooping up the partially eaten leche flan in the halo halo and other leftovers to the side of his tray. He was pretty sneaky about hoping no one would see him. He brings his tray to the back. Then at that point I stopped caring about what just happened and went back talking to my fiancee and brother. 5 minutes later our food was ready. They brought everything out even the halo-halo my fiancee decided not to order. The waiter tells my fiancee, "mam we have more leche flan, so i brought your halo-halo." Anyway, I start looking at our food and I notice a piece of rice stuck under the halo-halo and the leche flan was really small and mangled looking and then I looked at my brother's lumpia shanghai and it was broken in half and basically half the size then it normally is and had a few pieces of rice in the sauce. They drenched the whole plate with sauce to cover the lumpia.

The funny thing is... I told my fiancee and brother not to eat it and I asked the waiter directly that I saw him scoop of the leche flan from the other table and asked him if they reused it in my fiancee's halo-halo... he was surprised and started stuttering trying to explain himself and I insisted him on telling the truth and he said Yes. LOL I told him we refuse to eat anything on our table and he gets his manager and this is what pisses me off the most. He blamed the waiter for reusing the food. I said no, he's just a waiter here and he would not be reusing food if management didn't tell him to do so. Then he offered to give 10% discount lol. I told him no we didn't eat anything. We just paid our drinks and left.

Sad thing is... they probably reused our food on other people.

Very close to the Embassy, just behind it, is Harbor View Cafe. Harbor View is out over the water off Luneta and offers a great view of the Manila bay from the pier on which it is built. This may be my favorite all around restaurant in Manila. Maybe not the best food, but it is very good and the location is very nice and it is quite romantic in a local way with christmas lights and the water.

I also really like Kashmir for middle eastern food. This is on Padre Faura, just two blocks off the bay. This is some of the best middle eastern food in Manila.

I would say the best western food in the area is probably at The Fireplace in the Hyatt Casino. But this will easily run you $150.00 USD for a nice dinner. Though the same level food and service in the USA would be even more.

Further south off Adriatico Circle near the Malate Church there are lots of great little places and of course the Original Cafe Havana, Remedios, Korea House, and a great Japanese resto, whose name escapes me. This area is also a lot of fun at night as Adriatico is a fun "bar street" and relatively polite primarily for locals out having a good time with friends.

You will also find stacks of places to eat at the near by Robinson Mall, which has a new food court / restaurant area that is nice and while lots of the places are fast food type, there are a few gems in there.

Good luck!

I'll second that recommendation of Harbor View Cafe, been there a few times. The last two times I was there I had the lobster in chili sauce and lemon butter blackfish, both very good.

Also the Emerald Green has pretty good food and is near the Embassy just across Roxas blvd.

You can't go wrong with Harbor View Cafe on the water and the view.
