So I called USCIS Thursday to check on the status of my petition, filed may 20, 2011, wondering why it was taking so long. The operator then directed me to their website where it showed Vermont working on March 15 instead of saying 5 months processing time. Just seeing if anyone knew what was up with that? I thought they were much further along than that.

March 15 is the oldest petition in the system at the time of their last update which is "who knows when". You will not get accurate information on the process of your petition. There is nothing to update. It is not done in stages. Your petition sits in a box untill an adjudicator opens it, then reviews it and processes it in about 20 minutes. If everything is there, you will be approved 20 minutes after they open it. Until then, it is in a box. Adjudicators process 20-24 petitions per day, start to finish.

The coveted "touches" mean nothing. That is when they move the boxes around the office, they scan the bx and each petition in the box gets an "update" which is actually just to indicate which shelf or cubicle the box is sitting in.

Even if the website was still showing "5 months" proecssing dates, there is no mandate for USCIS to fall within that timeline. Unfortunately, the only truthful answer an operator at USCIS can give is "it will be processed when it is processed".

I hope you receive your NOA-2 soon.
