My visa was recently granted a CR1 visa, I entered the US through Miami.I thought upon entering the US all my original documents would be returned and the immigration officer would keep the photocopies however when my passport was stamped he said he would keep all the documents I submitted. I told him I thought I would get at least my wedding cert and birth cert back but he said he was keeping them. was this correct and if yes will they be returned to me at any stage?

Yes, he was correct. The proper time to ask for them back was at the interview. If you wait a couple of months, you can call USCIS and ask for them back as well, and they will return them if you had provided copies.

If you did not provide copies for them at the time you need to get another original for your self, or call and see.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

I did provide copies of everything. he just said he had to keep everything submitted. its a bit awkward because my wife needed the weddingcert for her name change and I hope that I recieve my ssn because if not I will have to find a way of getting a new birth cert from Ireland.

Well, you messed up by not asking at the embassy--there is no way CBP is returning anything, so like I said earlier, wait a couple of months and call USCIS--the odds are very high that they will return the originals if they have the copies.

You may not like the answer, but it is THE answer.
