My fiance will be coming into the US on his K-1 visa soon, and we don't know how to get him health insurance before he gets a green card. It's a gamble to leave him uninsured in that time. Do companies allow you to get health insurance with just a SSN, or do you require a green card as well? Does it vary by company? I can't find this information. I don't get mine through work so it's not simple like this, he will have to get his own individual insurance. Any thoughts? Thanks!

1 way a lot of people do it is to get travel insurance until you can set up proper medical insurance

You should only need a SSN. You don't need to prove immigration status to get insurance.

I'm assuming you are trying to add him to your insurance. Some companies may even allow you to add him w/o a SSN but that will vary.

when my wife arrive my private insurance (self employed) would only add her after 1 year residency. I had to switch jobs for one that had offered insurance.

Here is my blog post regarding Short Term Health Insurance that I availed of. It's good for 6 months and can be renewed. They only asked for basic info and looked at my passport. No SSN needed.

11/7/11 - NOA Received in the mail

11/12/11 - Biometrics Appointment received

11/28/11 - Case transferred to CSC

12/7/11 - Biometrics done

1/2/12 - EAD and AP approved (Card production)

1/11/12 - EAD/AP Card received

1/20/12 - Got Driver's License!

3/7/12 - GC approved!

3/9/12 - Got a job!

3/11/12 - GC on hand
