Media Tries To Spin Occupy Wall Street as a Left Wing Movement

It looks like CNN is doing their best to spin the story and make the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protests a product of the left as an answer to the Tea Party on the right. They do this even though no such distinction exists and in many ways, the Occupy Wall Street protests are a product of both the left and the right.

We took a screenshot (right) of the current headline story on CNN which is clearly trying to make the protests on Wall Street and across the nation a matter of the left, instead of just a group of people protesting what’s wrong with the current economic situation. The article itself even goes on to state:

When tea party rallies flared up across the country more than two years ago, conservative activists were mad about bailouts and their impact on the national debt. To them, government was part of the problem.

Occupy demonstrators are also upset about the financial crisis and the economy. But they see government as part of the solution.

“There’s a general sense that we’re getting screwed and we need to fix things,” Occupy D.C. protester Eric Lotke said at the same rally. Unlike the tea party, Lotke would raise taxes on the rich to pay for bridge and school construction projects to put people back to work.

But if Lotke had a tri-corner hat, he said he would tip it to the tea party for showing the Occupy movement how to turn anger into action. “Some of it is tea party. And some of it is hippies,” Lotke said of the Occupy protests.

So let us get this straight: CNN admits that both sides are angry at the same thing, admits the economy is in shambles, and because one guy says he wants taxes raised on the rich, then the entire thing is a “left wing” movement? We have to say we are a bit confused on this one. If we want to get really technical on the issue, people would realize that ‘Occupy Wall Street’ is more of a libertarian movement than one of the left or right. In turn that would mean it shares the same ideas from both the “left and the right,” and as libertarians like to point out themselves themselves; they are more ‘neutral’ than they are left or right. Even though technically on the political spectrum usually they are placed more to the right side of it. So why would the media try and spin such a thing as the idea that it’s the left’s version of the Tea Party? After all, they seem to forget that the left has the Coffee Party.

As we mentioned in our article the other day; “Occupy Wall Street: The Media is Clueless,” the media has a job to do. That job is to make its investors money and to keep the shareholders happy. With protests going on all over the country in almost every major city, you would think that something somewhere would have to give, but unfortunately the media doesn’t care about the people. They only care about those who they have to answer to and unfortunately, it’s not the people. Where do most of those share holders do their trading? The same place everyone does: Wall Street. With that being said, the media is just as much an enemy of this movement as the banks and corporations who received bailouts. The fact of the matter is, the media didn’t even care about this movement until over 500 people got arrested on Brooklyn bridge and it convinced union members and other groups to get involved. It has become an issue the media cannot ignore, and it has become an issue that they will do everything in their power to spin.

People’s voices are out there to be heard right now and all this media wants to do is spin the truth. It’s one thing that cannot be allowed to happen. This can not be one more thing that the media takes ownership of and ultimately shuts down the voices of those feel they have been wronged. It cannot be turned into a left vs right issue; because the moment it does, we’ll automatically lose to the politicians in Washington who are on opposite sides of the aisle. While it may not seem like they care either way, it will be much easier to dismiss a group of protesters the minute they are labelled as a partisan group rather than a unified one. Washington must see a unified group of people from both the left and the right if any changes are going to happen. It’s up to the alternative media and anyone out at the protests to stand up and voice such things if the cameras are in front of their face.

It’s going to be an interesting next few days here with the upcoming weekend to see how the media continues their story. The seed has been planted to make this a left vs right issue, but the question is whether the public will buy it or not. Divisiveness in situations like this never got anyone anywhere. That’s something to remember, especially when standing next to your neighbor who may not vote the exact same way you do, but holds the exact same frustrations and anger over the same issues. Unity is what will make Occupy Wall Street win the day. The question is: can they keep it that way?

No way. Libertarians, while not being completely right or left would never, ever, ever say that they see Government as "part of the solution". There may be some in this group that are protesting against government controls and regulations, but it seems that the majority of this crowd is advocating ideas that are nothing but left wing- not the "liberal" left wing, but the socialist left wing.
