Hi guys, I just received my wife's police certificate from Vietnam in Vietnamese. Are these police certificates usually in Vietnamese? And do they need to be certify-translated to English before we send it to the NVC?

Thanks!

Anything that was in Vietnamese I had translated to English. Anyone can do the translation that can speak both languages. In my case I used my now wife's Uncle that introduced us. At the bottom he made a notation that he was fluent in both languages and did the translation and printed his name and phone number.

Of course I wasn't sure if it needed translating but did anything that was in Vietnamese regardless.

does not need to be translated.... dont stress.. as long as it looks like the one in Lindals's photos you are ok. We screwed up and got one from the wrong office because we didnt understand exactly what it was or where it was coming from... they have plenty of emloyees that can read it.

You don't need to get it translated. It's not required. You can submit the original with your DS-230 package and make sure your wife has another copy of the original. For some reasons, my wife was able to obtain two originals.

After the interview, the CO returned everthing that we submitted (originals and copies) to my wife. Make sure you label your case number on every document.

Thanks for the answers guys.

My wife sent me both copies (Vietnamese and English). But the Vietnamese version doesn't seem "original" at all; it looks like it's a photocopy of the original version, but it does have the official red seal that most Vietnamese documents have. Does this make it "official/certified copy"?

Thank you.

How do you obtain a police certificate in Vietnam? My wife and I are a bit confused. I thought it is issued by the So Tu Phap (Department of Justince) at her place, which is Saigon right? Also she lived in the US for about 6 years for school. Do I contact the local police for the report in US?

There is no need for a police record for the time spent in the U.S. (as specified on DOS website) - The U.S. government does not issue police records.

For the Vietnamese police certificate, she has to apply for it at the Department of Justice of the city/province where she is registered as a permanent resident ("hộ khẩu thường trú", which is different from "tạm trú" - temporary resident). When she applies for it, she can ask for as many original copies as she wants.
