I'm a little confused by the whole work authorisation process

So you file for EAD along with AOS and once you get the EAD you can work

Now, isn't this replaced by your 2 year green card once it gets approved

Or do you have to renew your EAD after a year?

Am I right in thinking if you do need to renew the EAD there isn't a filing fee?

I've read through all the instructions on USCIS but it's not clear

Kinda thinking ahead as I'm only filing AOS now, but i need to know where I stand

The reason why you wanna apply for your EAD while going thru AOS is that while your case is pending for the AOS you can work legally with the EAD approved. You never know how long your AOS might last, plus it is "free"(Included in the fee for AOS).

Now once you get Approved for your AOS(2 years green card if married less than 2 year when getting approved or 10 year green card if married more than 2 years) your EAD become invalid since your green card becomes your work permit AND your authorization of stay(legal resident status). So once you get your GC you don't need your EAD anymore.

No renewing the EAD (UNLESS your AOS takes more time and your EAD expires in which case you will need to have it renewed, but most likely AOS takes around 6 month processing) since once you get the GC that is all you will need while being a legal PERMANENT RESIDENT.

They usually take it (EAD) away at the AOS interview since you won't be needing it when approved.

Same whenever you get approved for your citizenship, they take away your current GREEN CARD and will give you your Certificate.

Hope my answer wasn't too confusing. Bottom line is once you get approved for your AOS you don't need the work permit anymore so no worries about renewing. Only worry about renewing your 2 years GC 90 days prior to it expiring.

The filing fee for EAD is waived when applied concurrently with AOS. Once you get your EAD, you are authorized to work. When your application for AOS is approved, the GC is then issued to you which will supersede your EAD. Your GC allows you to work and there is no need to apply for EAD renewal.

Hope this helps.
