Hello I am an Australian citizen looking for some information for the early future. I am planning on marrying my boyfriend who is an American citizen. He is 18 and I am 27. I want to know if the co-sponsor (if needed) that sponsors me can be his friend or does it have to be his parents? I understand that the Australian consulate is more lenient as there are virtually no fraud cases in Australia so I am asking to be sure. It would be good if his parents can co-sponsor for him but unfortunately, they do not like the idea of him having a relationship with someone he's never met in person (we will meet very soon) so I'm not sure if his parents would co-sponsor for him. We love each other very much and it's unfortunate that his parents aren't accepting the relationship. Even though his parents are not accepting the relationship there is nothing we can do because we love each other very much. We do not go a day without talking to each other and we truly do love each other that it's unexplainable. So the bottom line is, if the co-sponsor can be a close friend instead of a parent. Thank you for all the help VisaJourney.

I'm pretty sure it can be anybody as long as they meet the requirements, that's what I've been told in the K1 forums :)

Good luck with your journey and your exciting first meeting!

You should be able to use anyone for a co-sponsor so long as they are an U.S. citizen and meet the poverty guidelines.

I wouldn't jump too quickly into the visa thing though until you've met in person. Once you go over and meet his parents (if that's possible) they could be a lot more supportive of the relationship. A lot of things could happen before you get to the interview stage (which is where you would need a co-sponsor) since that is likely at least four months from the time you file. And since you can't file for the K-1 until you've met in person, that tacks on a few more weeks/months depending on what you are planning there. I would highly recommend trying to meet each other's families. A lot of parents struggle with the idea of online relationships because they feel their child is being scammed or that it isn't real. Seeing you two together could be all that they need to change their opinion and be behind you a hundred percent. So if at all possible, meet with them and see how things move forward from that.

But it shouldn't be an issue using a close friend as long as they are willing to sign the paperwork and meet all the requirements. Best of luck to you!

It doesn't say anywhere that it has to be family but Dave and Shannon had a bit of trouble at his interview, they were using a friend as a co sponsor but got told to get a family member to do it instead. If you look up their interview review though i daresay it's in that :) Travis and i used his Mom as my co sponsor and we didn't have a problem. just make sure that your fiance fills out the I-134 aswell even though you're using a co sponsor

Finally time for AOS.......

Gday

we used a friend as a co sponsor and got all the way through to the interview with them but at the interview got told it had to be family cos they cant rely on a friend to look after you financially if needed... so if i was you, i would travel to the states first and meet his family, see how things go and then move forward.. cos they do ask you if you have been to america and i think you have to at least been there once and you have to have met in person... hope all goes well for ya mate.. finding sponsors can be stressful i know!
