Romney-Cain bromance forms at debate

AMES, Iowa — Is a bromance forming between Mitt Romney and fellow Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain? “Herman Cain and I are the two on the stage here who’ve actually worked in the real economy,” Romney said, unprompted, of the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO during Thursday night’s debate at Iowa State University.

“If people want to send to Washington someone who spent their entire career in government, they can choose a lot of folks,” Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, said at the Fox News-sponsored event. “But if they want to choose somebody who understands how the private sector works, they’re going to have to choose one of us, because we’ve been in it during our career.”

In an interview with The Daily Caller after the debate, Cain reacted to Romney’s remarks by saying, “I wanted to go over and shake his hand. You kidding me?”

“We are the only two who have had the length of business experience. I thought it was very nice of him to say.”

If Romney wins the nomination, does this mean Cain will make his list of possible vice presidential picks?

TheDC asked the question to Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom in the spin room after the debate. Fehrnstrom let out a light chuckle and said, “I think it’s presumptuous to talk about VPs.”

“What Mitt has said — he didn’t say it at this debate but he said it at the last one — is each one of the candidates would make a better president than Barack Obama.”

He worked as a mathematician (in ballistics) for the Navy, a business analyst for Coca-Cola, and VP of corporate systems and services (information technology) for Pillsbury.

Cain changed careers in mid-life and moved to Pillsbury's restaurant division (Burger King). Managed 400 restaurants, then became chairman of the Godfather's Pizza chain.

He served on the board of the National Restaurant Association in 1994-1995, and was the the association's president in 1996.

Herman Cain was the Chairman of The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City from 1995 to 1996 (and deputy chairman 1992-1994).

Herman Cain has served on the board of directors of Nabisco, Creighton University, SuperValu, UtiliCorp United, AGCO, The Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Morehouse College, Whirlpool, Hallmark, Aquila, and The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

Recently has hosted radio program on WSB in Atlanta.

Joined Boston Consulting Group upon graduation from college, and worked as a consultant to multiple businesses. In 1977 joined consulting group Bain & Company where he continued his career as a management consultant.

In 1984 was chosen to head up Bain & Company spin-off Bain Capital, an investment firm that specialized in leveraged buyouts.

He was president of Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002.

Today, Obama’s remaining senior economic advisers are NEC chief Gene Sperling and budget director Jack Lew, as well as Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. While Geithner has a master’s in economics, his real expertise was in international finance. As chairman of the New York Fed, he specialized in the care and feeding of Wall Street.

Sperling and Lew, while wise in the ways of Washington, are both lawyers.
