Not really - we traded future prosperity for some short term gains.

Not necessarily. As long as the gains are at least partially used to fill the budget gap. Imagine, for a second, that we had retained the fiscal course we were on at the beginning of the century. We would have had a much smaller debt to GDP ratio when the big one hit and would have been in a much better position to offset the losses w/o incurring this huge pile of debt. The problem is that rather than being fiscally responsible, Washington decided early in this century to put deficits on an accelerated path leaving us damaged already when the economy collapsed.

Well, the budget looked great in 2000. The budget outlook was promising - I think we were on track to reduce the national debt. And then Washington changed all that. And those that did are now complaining about the very fruits of their hard labor. Such is politics.

Yeah. I keep hearing this excuse of "the previous administration" and when you pull the wool off the front of your eyes you realize the "previous administration" looks a lot like today's administration.
