Anyone have success with Magic Jack. I sent one to my fiancee Jenny and it is very choppy and most times we can't here each other. She has a modern Netbook with sufficient memory and before sent to her work jus fine with me on comcast surfing. But, there on wireless smartbro it is just ok for surfing and horrible for Magic jack calls.

So what I am asking is what ISP in philippines would work better than the SmartBro wireless? Does anyone have a current setup that is working good for them?

I've been using MagicJack for a couple of years now. Your fiancee need at least a minimum of 750+kbps and above Upstream but 1 mbps Upstream is recommended, otherwise the reception will be choppy. My wife used to have PLDT and most of the time it's choppy. She changed her provider and now using Globe. Sometimes, it still choppy but much better than PLDT.Also to lessen the problems. Your fiancee should not doing any uploading pics/files, streaming videos/movies and playing online games while using the magic jack.... I hope this would help! Edited by rhenzhen

it has to be PLDT DSL. smartbro...globe tattoo...sun are all garbage.

not sure if that's an option for her though. if she has a pldt landline then there are plans that are affordable. i pay 700 for the landline and 800 for the dsl. hope that helps.

I would recommend a hardwired setup than wireless. Hardwired have stable connection then using wireless. I also heard about bad feedbacks about using Smart Bro Wireless. I believe Sky Cable is the best ISP provider in the Philippines. I'm not really sure. Tell your fiancee to search a good ISP provider that offer at least 1mpbs Upstream NOT downstream... I hope this would help!

Thanks to both of you! I'm just confused now which is better, PLDT or Globe? I want to only order a new provider once. One is saying globe is better and the other PLDT. Smartbro is ok, but my main reason for the change is again to make use of Magic Jack.

We've used Magic jack and didnt like it - you are right it was choppy and you always have to have computer turned on. We also have Vonage, which we love! Works well and you don't have to have computer turned on. We also use Directo.com - chip installed on my babeee's cell phone and I can call him anytime for a flat monthly rate. We both have iphones so we get to skype and yahoo chat as well.

Thank goodness for technology or we'd both be going crazeeeeee....

it might depend on the area too when it comes to PLDT. she can contact them and they can determine if they service her area. she might have to ask neighbors. i'm sure where she lives there's a corner net shop so she can inquire about their service. good luck.

Anyone know the speed of smartbro? She has the usb one. I think the advice for wired is good. I don't think she really needs wireless because she uses it in the house all the time.

I have six magic jacks in the Philippines and generally they work great. The one in Manila gets choppy on PLDT sometimes. When it does get slow however, my stepdaughter can generally see a slowdown in all the web performance.

I've been using a Magic Jack and it works fine before...but now when im calling my husband in the US it sounds choppy because of my connection. I am 1mb with PLDT. I have also use Packet8 and Vonage, but I prefer Vonage Voip but apprently it has a maintaining 30$ (+/-) monthly charges but it is a 101% good connection. Vonage should give me a PF for advertising their products hahahahaha. But seriously, bandwith connection with all the ISP prov here in PI sucks :)

So this is just a standard usb type smartbro setup? That is weird she is currently in Butuan and it sucks beyond belief. I spent alot mailing that to her and the netbook only to have choppy to the point where I can't hear 99% of what she is saying :(

magic jack works really well with DSL high speed . no broadband like smartbro.

OK, here's the story on MJ. Ya either love it or hate it. Ya gotta think it thru why you need this product.

The consensus here is clear that you need a high speed internet connection to begin with to have a successful MJ experience. If you do, then why not just use Skype and video cam? The answer is, if you have Lola who is a computerphobe or totally computer illiterate, then using a standard phone to communicate with loved ones using MJ may be for you.

Ask yourself, "Why pay for MJ with my high speed connection, when I can skype video chat for free?"

Good luck!

My girl is from Mindinao also, so I know getting her a hard-wire dsl line is a pipe dream. I studied my options carefully, (I have 16 yrs in telecom).

I got her a Tipid Calls phone. here is the deal. I got her a cheap Nokia (UNLOCKED! most cp's are already un-locked, or, "open" as they call them). Tipid calls sent her a sim card (it's owned by oopa/pldt), via LBC pick-up. She cannot make any outgoing calls & the phone only works in her area code, but I call a local access # & can talk to her 24/7 for a flate rate, it cost's 45 buck a month.

BTW, I been to Butuan couple times, that is cool you been to Mindinao, hit me up some time. All the best to you two!
