Hi. I am about to file my N400 application in the fall. I had several question:

1. I had plan to change my first name (just reverse my first and middle name) for the longest time. My wife and I were not able to get around to do that. But we are going to initiate my name change after Naturalization, do I need to report it to USCIS?

2. Should I change my name before I apply for a US passport?

3. Should I change my name at my home country (I plan on to have dual citizenship)? can I have two set of passports (US and my home country) with 2 different names?

4. If there are anything I need to know that I miss?

Thank you

The by far biggest perk of the naturalization process is that you can choose any name (within reason) under which you will be "reborn" as a US citizen. It's free of charge and very easy: you just write it down on the N-400 and then sign 3 identical forms at the interview.

Your Certificate of Naturalization will be in your new name and so will will be any document from thereon. US passport, SSN card, and driver's license included.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Dear JustBob

I'm getting ready to file for US citizenship, But I'm really confused on how I go by changing my name back to my maiden name.

My scenario is as follow:

I have been a green card holder for 5 years now. I got divorced from my Ex husband 2 years ago, but never asked to change my name back to my maiden name during the divorce process, therefore my divorce decree shows my ex husband's last name which i'm currently using.

Now that I want to file for naturalization, I would like to get my maiden name back. I'have read that I can state that I want to change my name when I fill out the N 400 form, but I don't have any supporting documents like a court order to send with the form. and I don't want to go through the court because I called them and I was told that it will cost me $400 here in the state of FL.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Please help!!
