Where? Nation wide? EMTs on an ambulance? My Asawa just dialed 911 and number does not exist. I'm in Olongapo. Educate me because I googled it to make sure and NO 911 in PI.

Yup..I'm on 13A and I could work here if I wanted ..but working 6 days a week..10-12 hours a day for $200-300 a month just isn't that appealing...and that's if you can find a job competing with thousands of college educated Filipinos working in Jollibee or SM department store. I really wanted to post to this thread earlier but then I saw the OP appears to be very young...I WONDER where he's from to be tazzed and abused by the local US law enforcement while haveing his rights stripped away buying a beer. Not meant as a flame but does the words 'Third World Country' mean anything? Btw, IF you have a medical emergengy in the PI (Heart attack, major auto accident, etc) you WILL die. There's NO 911 and NO EMTs here and the ambulance has to sit in traffic like everyone else (if you can get one)!

Hasty generalization. Dad had a heart attack in PI. He's fine. My brother was in a car accident a few years ago. He's fine too. Can happen to anyone, anywhere and you wont surely die just coz it happened in the Philippines.

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Filed: K-1 Visa Country: New Zealand
Timeline

This is an issue Kate and I have struggled with significantly and it almost got to the point where I wanted to throw in the towel and forget the entire idea of moving. I have had some experience living and working in the USA during the past few years and here are my thoughts ...

- New Zealand has a much more "stress free" state of living,

- We get free healthcare

- We get heavily subsidised higher education (NZD12-15000 for a Bachelors Degree here)

- We get four weeks of guaranteed annual leave per year (my current job has five)

- We get five sick days per year (most employers offer ten)

- We have generous social security (welfare) and pension (KiwiSaver)

- We have paid parental leave (up to one year I think, should check on that)

- Our salaries are generally much higher than in the US

But ... in saying all of this, I have to say the US will be a change for a few years, I can go back to school and do some graduate study, Kate's family have welcomed me in a way that makes me teary eyed I am really amazed .... and I can become a citizen in three years then we can choose where we want to live. She has said we will consider moving back here once I am done with school.

It is also harder for her to immigrate here before we marry, Immigration New Zealand want us to be living together for a year beforehand and its gotten quite hard to get as there are several categories of domestic partnership here that do not exist elsewhere (incl in the US) so you really have to prove your case to them. Once we have been married for a year or so she can become an instant permanent resident however must wait two years to get access to student loans which is a bummer.

You would be right in saying I am concerned about job prospects and things like that but we'll try it for a bit and see what happens, at worst it will be something different. Will it be better? Sure damn hope so!

I wouldn't say that with 100% certainty. However, I do tend to agree with your thinking. Having worked in hospitals, both in Manila and in the provinces, I have seen many cardiac and neuro patients die before they reach the ER. Why? In most cases, the time interval from the onset of the acute condition (heart attack, stroke, car accident) to the start of medical treatment would be at least an hour...if not, hours! Since there really is no national emergency call center (like 911), no immediate care (aspirin or nitroglycerin for MI patients) is given. Patients and their family would rely on what they know...or what they have heard from other people.

I agree with the ambulance situation there. IF you are lucky to get one, their response time is nothing less than shocking. Most of the time, it is not their fault. The traffic situation in the Philippines, and the drivers' ignorance of proper driving WITH rules, only worsens the inefficiency. In the end, the patient is the one who suffers.

I agree about the medical, I think St lukes is the only chance of survival here if something bad happens, if you can make it there and afford it. I haven't seen any other hospitals so far that i felt were decent. (as of yet). Another plus is the medical is affordable here unlike in the USA.

Agreed. St Lukes is one of three hospitals in the Philippines that is internationally accredited. Of course, the cost of medical care is much higher than others. :D

Yes, I have BEEN to a 911 call center. is it nationwide? no. where is it? Davao City

Please READ Markieboys post. If you would have stated Davao and their LOCAL 911 services we could have had a civil discussion. But you chose to attack me and call me a liar with your trolling. The POINT was THERE IS NO SINGULAR NUMBER A PERSON CAN USE HERE TO ENSURE HELP IS ON THE WAY!!! My Asawa's grandfather died in an ambulance sitting in Manila traffic! Just a driver....TO MY knowledge EMTs do not exist in most ambulances. Your odds of surviving a serious medical emergency here are VERY SLIM!!!! Educate yourself.

Back on topic.

The top ten reasons I chose to leave the Philippines after 3 years are:

10 Crazy drivers

9 Terrible or nonexistent customer service

8 Corruption

7 Food

6 Terrible infrastructure

5 Cruelty to pets and all animals i.e.####### Fighting, Dogs raised for food in unthinkable conditions, etc

4 No enforced laws to protect irreplaceable wildlife and fishes..fishing with dynamite is still practiced nationwide

3 If your White your rich mentality

2 Poor medical

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY I'M LEAVING THE PI IS...(drum roll please)

Davao City's emergency number is 911

Makati City, its 168

Marikina is 161

It depends on the location and service. Besides the driver, Marikina does have other people in the ambulance to help a patient.

Ok fine...I'm on this forum for a brief time to assist myself and my Wife in obtaining a Visa..once that's complete, we'll live our lives and probably never return to VJ. In the mean time , we are grateful for the help we receive here.

You, on the other hand have trolled this site for 6 years..and in looking at your previous posts..offering little information of help to anyone (in my opinion of course..others may disagree, no problem). I do know..the few times your quoted me its been in a negative manner..I LIVE here and I think I have a little better clue on whats going on. I don't know your situation nor do I care. But I do know that the MAJORITY of the VJ'ers have only visited the PI for a brief time..AND.. I MIGHT be able to offer them information to save their life. The PI is not main street USA! And with that....I'm out of this thread. (although it's a very thought provoking thread and I've enjoyed it..Thanks Adan and Thet ).
