I was just reading the instructions for our interview and it says that they need the petitioner's birth certificate (long form not abstract)

My husband (US citizen) was born abroad and he only has a certificate of birth abroad...

What should we do?

That's what I think we should do, now he doesn't have his birth certificate of the country he was born in, his mom has it, hopefully she still has it... Anyways my husband is going to call the Vital Records Section on Monday

Thanks we need that good luck!
